Horsovsky Tyn: Castle, Palace Park and Panoramic Views

Townscape and Architectural History

Horšovský Týn Castle was founded in the mid-13th century as a Gothic castle and belonged to the bishops of Prague. After the fire of 1547, it was converted shortly afterwards into a monumental Renaissance castle under Johann the Younger of Lobkowicz. This sequence brings the medieval foundation and Renaissance character together directly in the town’s history.

The Palace Park as a Distinctive Highlight

Horšovský Týn Palace Park covers nearly 40 hectares and is freely accessible from the town. The lower part of the palace park contains two ponds, around which walking paths run. The park thus complements the historic buildings with waterside paths and a clearly different focus for visitors.

The park itself also has a multilayered history: it began in 1550 as an Italian-style Renaissance garden, was redesigned as an English park in 1880 and transformed into a landscape park in 1905. The three design phases give the grounds their own historical dimension.

Viewing Towers and Cycle Route

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul on Republic Square has a viewing tower. Another viewing tower is located on Šibeniční vrch and is freely open to the public year-round. From there, you can enjoy views of Horšovský Týn and its immediate surroundings, as well as the entire Šumava Mountains and the Český les.
