Česká Kubice between Šumava and the Český les

Česká Kubice combines a distinctive landscape with trails, natural attractions and historical connections. The village offers views across Šumava. Rising above Česká Kubice is Čerchov, the highest mountain in the Český les at 1,042 m. At Na Skále, a sharply defined quartz ridge running through the Český les emerges at the surface. This brings mountain scenery, geological features and protected nature together within a compact thematic area. The landscape can therefore be experienced both from a distance and at a specific geological site: the view across Šumava and the quartz ridge at Na Skále provide different perspectives.

Landscape and Natural Attractions

Česká Kubice is, among other things, one of the starting points for visiting the Český les Protected Landscape Area. The protected natural monument Sokolova vyhlídka is also located nearby, covering an area of 3.5 ha and featuring an exposure of a quartz ridge. Another destination is the 11-km-long Devil’s Nature Trail with 21 stops. It runs in the vicinity of Česká Kubice and is particularly suitable for hiking or mountain biking. The educational trail complements the relatively open landscape experience with a fixed sequence of stops. The natural monument, by contrast, focuses on a single geological feature. The destinations therefore differ both in their purpose and in how you can explore the surrounding area.

Cycling and Hiking on Signposted Trails

For cycling, International Cycle Route No. 3 is a defining reference point: it runs from Prague via Plzeň to Regensburg through Česká Kubice. A considerable section of this route has been developed as a cycle path in the area of Česká Kubice. For hiking, a blue-marked trail connects the state border, Česká Kubice and Babylon. Another blue-marked hiking trail runs between Česká Studánka, Čerchov and Pec pod Čerchovem. A red-marked hiking trail known as “Horizontálka” also leads from Česká Kubice. The various markings and routes give you several clearly distinct ways to explore the landscape. The routes differ in their function: the international route connects larger towns, while the marked trails link individual destinations and sections in the surroundings of Česká Kubice.

Railway, Culture and Local History

Since 1861, the Furth im Wald–Domažlice–Plzeň railway line has run through Česká Kubice. Railway line No. 180 through Česká Kubice connects Plzeň and Domažlice with Germany. Local culture includes the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua in Česká Kubice and Horní Folmava, which is registered as an immovable cultural monument. The history of the surrounding area also shapes its character: in the pre-war period, the area around Česká Kubice and its local districts was an important tourism centre; because of its climatic location, it was known as a “health resort”. Nature and trail experiences thus stand alongside a historical setting shaped by the railway connection, the church and the area’s former tourism profile.
