Ždánov – Castle, Chapel and Views

Ždánov combines a clearly recognizable castle history with religious sites, a significant landscape feature and a signposted cycle route. Those who want to combine historical traces and landscape experiences on their trip to the Czech Republic will find several different themes in a compact area: Augustinian tradition, monument preservation, views of the Český les and references to local history.

Ždánov Castle and Augustinian History

Ždánov Castle was built in 1730 by the Augustinians of Pivoň as a summer residence for guests of the Augustinian monastery in Pivoň. It has been designated a cultural monument since 1958. The castle complex also includes a farmyard on the southwestern edge of the village. The site therefore reflects not only a representative side of its former monastic use, but also an economic one.

The castle’s main portal was restored, including the reinstatement of the Augustinian coat of arms’ earlier color scheme. Opposite the castle in Ždánov stands a life-size sandstone statue of Saint Augustine, registered as an immovable cultural monument. This provides several specific points of reference for cultural orientation in the area: the architectural history of the castle, its connection to Pivoň and the visible efforts to preserve historic details.

Village Character and Religious Heritage

The historic center also deserves separate consideration. In relation to the village pond, it forms an urbanistically significant compositional space. The village center can therefore be understood not only through individual buildings, but also through the relationship between built-up space and the water surface.

Another notable site is the Chapel of Blessed Koloman and Saint Pio of Pietrelcina. It was completed on September 23, 2018, and consecrated by Bishop Mons. Tomáš Holub. A pilgrimage Mass is celebrated in the chapel in October. This religious theme is complemented by the six-meter-high wrought-iron cross near Wendlovna, which was restored in spring 2012. Thus, alongside its older castle history, Ždánov also encompasses more recent examples of religious design and preservation.

Pařezovský kopec and the Český les

Between Ždánov and Pařezov lies Pařezovský kopec, a registered significant landscape feature. It offers views of the Český les, including Čerchov and the Haltravský hřeben ridge. Endangered orchid species can still grow on Pařezovský kopec. The landscape, distant views and reference to these plant populations give the natural theme a concrete character without reducing the destination to a purely cultural attraction.

Cycle Route and Further Discoveries

For active exploration, cycle route 2287 is signposted and equipped with rest areas and educational infrastructure. Along the 21 km section, information boards provide information about local history and other places of interest. An additional historic site is the restored Červený Mlýn, which lies in the cadastral area of Ždánov. The range of attractions therefore extends from the castle complex and religious monuments to the landscape, cycle route and regional architectural history.
