Discover Otov: Mining History and Nature

Otov combines an unusually rich local history with traces of former mining and geological features. One of the most distinctive testimonies is the Late Gothic wayside shrine: in the Domažlice region, Otov is one of only four places where such wayside shrines have survived to this day. The exploration of the village therefore begins not with just any attraction, but with a rare regional testimony.

Historical Traces Around Otov

The first written mention of Otov dates from 1239. The village’s economic history can also be traced in several places. A mill belonging to Otov is documented in writing from 1657, but it was demolished in the 1980s. Gold was washed in the Černý potok stream near Otov in the Middle Ages and probably even earlier. A stone in Otov has two depressions that were used for gold amalgamation.

Further traces can be found on the elevations of Červený vrch and Větrný vrch (Fučná). There, remains of adits from the period of feldspar mining in the area around Otov have been preserved. The history of this extraction of raw materials is therefore not limited to written records, but is also reflected in the forms of the landscape.

Educational Trail with Nature and Mining Themes

The connection between the landscape and industrial history can be followed particularly clearly on the “Těžba živců na Poběžovicku” educational trail. It consists of two circular routes with a total of 14 stations. The content covers both natural-history features and former mining.

The “Otovský lom” station focuses on the recultivation and revitalization of the landscape. It therefore addresses not only the mining site itself, but also the subsequent treatment of its surroundings. At the “Důl Otov Fučná” station, by contrast, the focus is on the mineralogy of pegmatites, the processing and use of the raw material, and bats. There, pegmatites and their mineralogy connect the geological focus with former feldspar extraction. The educational trail thus complements the visible traces of mining with information about rocks, their use, and another aspect of nature. “Otovský lom” directs attention to the landscape after mining, while “Důl Otov Fučná” brings together pegmatites, the use of raw materials, and bats.

Geological Features at Červený vrch

The Červený vrch geological locality lies about 100 meters southeast of Otov and covers 1.16 hectares. It includes abandoned open-pit mines, spoil heaps, and pits from pegmatite mining. The combination of these mining forms describes different remnants of the same former use. Červený vrch is also a nature monument protecting a former feldspar mine. At the same time, the area is considered an important documentation site for the pegmatites of the Poběžovice area.
