Loučim between pilgrimage and trails

Loučim brings together pilgrimage history, historical traces, and cross-border trails to create a destination with several distinct facets. At its center is the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, which became an important pilgrimage site in the Pošumaví region in the 14th century. It is also Loučim’s oldest historical monument. A projecting tower stands in front of the church and probably dates from the early 16th century.

In front of the church stands a sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1818. The statue is surrounded by four mighty, nearly 200-year-old linden trees protected as heritage monuments. As a result, several historical features are concentrated in this one place: the pilgrimage church, the older tower, the monument, and the square shaped by its old trees. This creates a tangible cultural focal point where Loučim’s religious and architectural history can be understood particularly well.

Further evidence of the village’s history completes this picture. Loučim’s house no. 3 is a partially timber-framed, three-part residential building of the stable type. The building may date from the first third to the middle of the 19th century. The Jewish cemetery is also part of the village’s historic heritage; it is classified as an immovable cultural monument. Educational trail, hiking trail, and cross-border route

For more active days, the Loučim educational trail offers a clearly defined circuit. The trail leads through the forests north of the municipality and returns to Loučim. Eight stations feature texts in Czech and German. The trail provides information about the local nature and history, Jewish culture, and ecology. Its bilingual design makes the individual stations accessible even when you want to combine different interests during your excursion.

The Stezka zpomalení has a different focus. It is a German-Czech themed trail with spiritual reflections, as well as a cross-border hiking and cycling route from Neukirchen beim Heiligen Blut to Loučim. Additional circular trails complement the offering. When the Stezka zpomalení opened, 50 cyclists from Bavaria came to the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Loučim. Thus, alongside local history, hiking and cycling also stand as independent travel ideas connected with Loučim.

Two pilgrimage dates throughout the year

Two special pilgrimages take place in Loučim: an autumn Marian pilgrimage on the Sunday after September 8 and a second, so-called spring pilgrimage, on Easter Monday. These dates give a stay a specific religious focus at a particular time of year. Outside these occasions, Loučim can be explored more through its church, monuments, and paths through the forests.
