Discover Hvožďany: Nature, Trails and History

Hvožďany is a settlement situated on elevated ground 2.5 km west of Poběžovice. The village combines a preserved historic layout with protected meadows, an exceptional geological outcrop and trails for hikers and cyclists. Village Green and History

A branch of the road from Poběžovice to Mnichov crosses the spacious village green of Hvožďany. The village preserves the layout of a circular village green with a village pond. This structure gives the settlement a clearly recognizable historic centre. Hvožďany was first mentioned in 1528 as part of the abandoned Starý Herštějn Castle. Later, the village became part of the Poběžovice estate.

The economic history of the area is also connected with water. Historically, Hvožďany included mills and a paper mill on the Pivoňka stream. Several mills were once in operation south of Hvožďany, near Mlýnský potok. Those interested in the development of small Bohemian settlements will therefore find not only a historic village centre here, but also traces of former workplaces and production sites.

Protected Meadows and Distinctive Rocks

An important natural destination is Hvožďanská louka. The protected natural monument covers just under 7 hectares on the southeastern slope of Nademlýnský vrch and lies on the boundary between the cadastral areas of Načetín and Hvožďany. It protects diverse natural meadow vegetation, including specially protected plant species. The area lies south of Načetín and includes pastures with species-rich, moisture-loving flowering vegetation.

The two natural destinations have different highlights: Hvožďanská louka is known for its species-rich, moisture-loving flowering vegetation, while Český val features a large quartz vein outcrop.

The geological site Český val u Poběžovic in the cadastral area of Hvožďany u Poběžovic, part of Hvožďany, offers a different landscape experience. The rock outcrop is one of the few large, well-preserved quartz vein outcrops that form the Český křemenný val. It lies about 1.5 km west of Poběžovice on the road to Mnichov, 250 m beyond the turn-off to Hvožďany. The outcrop is accessible by car without restriction; the access road comes to within 250 m of the site.

Hiking and Cycling through Hvožďany

A hiking trail and several cycling routes pass through Hvožďany. Cycle Route 2281 runs through the village. The first section of the long-distance Zlatá stezka 14 trail from Poběžovice to Bělá nad Radbuzou also passes through Hvožďany and Mnichov to Pivoň. During a stay, this allows you to combine different perspectives: the village green and historical heritage, protected meadows, the quartz vein outcrop and routes connecting Hvožďany with other places in the region.
