Pelechy – Local History and Trails in Czechia

Pelechy combines a multilayered local history with designated routes through fields and forests. A Place with Several Historical Layers

Pelechy was established between 1768 and 1789 in the Kout estate. The place name has also been preserved in several historical forms: records from 1789, 1854 and 1895 list the names Pelechny, Pelechen and Bernloch. The historical German name Bernloch is explained as deriving from “Pelech,” meaning “cave” or “animal den.” In the case of Pelechy, this presumably refers to a remote settlement hidden in the forests. This interpretation draws attention to the village’s distinctive historical naming without conflating the later forms of the name.

Memorial Sites and Cultural Monuments

The former elementary school building is a central feature of the village landscape. Together with the majestic lime trees, it forms an important landmark and a cultural monument of Pelechy. Another historical trace leads to the neighboring settlement of Šnory, formerly known by the German name Kohlstäten. After the end of the Second World War in 1945, it was depopulated and disappeared. Šnory is therefore one of the places where the changing history of the landscape is particularly evident.

Háječek is also one of Pelechy’s defining features. Teacher Černý planted it together with his pupils after the war; today, Háječek is regarded as an adornment of the village. Southwest of Pelechy, a chapel has also been designated as an architecturally valuable object. The chapel, the former school building with its lime trees, and Háječek each provide their own distinctive accent: here the focus is on architecture, there on memory, and elsewhere on the shaping of the landscape.

Getting Around on Foot and by Bicycle

The field and forest roads in Pelechy are primarily intended for shared use in landscape management and recreation by pedestrians and cyclists. Existing cycling routes and marked hiking trails of the KČT are also designated for Pelechy. Those who enjoy dividing their days between exploring the village and outdoor activity can take these different types of routes into account when planning their stay. The designated routes complement the cultural traces in the village, but their designation should not be taken to imply any particular level of difficulty or route.
