Mnichov between the Český les and the Pivoňka

Mnichov lies in the southern Český les in the valley of the Pivoňka stream, 2 km southwest of the town of Poběžovice. The village combines a distinctive landscape with a remarkable density of historical points of interest.

Landscape between valleys, elevations, and waterways

The Český les Nature Park extends into the municipal area of Mnichov. The Pivoňka flows through the village from south to northeast towards Poběžovice. North of Mnichov, the Mlýnský potok also joins it, a tributary of the Pivoňka. These waterways give the locality a clear landscape orientation, without reducing Mnichov to a single viewpoint.

The differences in elevation around the village are also clearly pronounced. To the southeast, the terrain rises steeply to the 607 m-high Čertovka. To the west, the ascent is more gradual towards the 595 m-high U lesíka, which belongs to the Pivoňské hory. Those who want to combine nature and culture when planning their trip will therefore find a place here between a valley landscape and rising terrain. The 31 km-long cycle route 2281 also runs through Mnichov, connecting Nemanice with Bělá nad Radbuzou.

Chapel, monastery, and castle ruins

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity stands in the village square. It was built in 1728 and is a historical point of interest located directly in the village. The first written mention of Mnichov dates from 1550. Together, these two dates give the village a tangible historical depth without requiring a large town center.

Another focal point is in the village district of Pivoň. The former Augustinian monastery is a national cultural monument. It is located in the municipality of Mnichov, in the village district of Pivoň and in the Pivoň cadastral area. It was founded in the 13th century. The monastery acquired its present appearance through a High Baroque reconstruction after the monastery was dissolved and converted into a château. Particularly noteworthy is the early Gothic presbytery of the monastery church: it is considered the oldest known purely Gothic building in the Czech Republic that is entirely free of Romanesque stylistic elements.

An important restriction should be noted for specific visit planning: the Augustinian monastery in Pivoň is currently closed to the public due to renovation work. The complex therefore remains an important historical part of the municipality, but is currently not a regularly accessible excursion destination.

About 2 km southwest of the village of Mnichov, the ruins of Starý Herštejn are located in the Vranov u Mnichova cadastral area. They were probably founded before 1266 and fell into disrepair at the beginning of the 16th century. The chapel in Mnichov, the monastery in Pivoň, and the castle ruins thus represent different periods and forms of architectural history.
