Historical Traces in Úboč

Úboč is a destination for travellers who want to discover history during their stay not only in large cities, but also in a smaller village. The single-nave, Early Gothic Church of St. Nicholas from the 13th century is particularly distinctive. Its construction history can be seen in several extensions: A new chancel and a sacristy were added in the second half of the 14th century. During the Baroque refurbishment, the Chapel of St. Anne, with an oratory and stair extension, was also built in 1763.

The site of the Úboč fortress is also part of the village’s historical setting. It is listed in the archaeological register under Category I as “Úboč - kostel Sv. Mikuláše a tvrziště”. The remains of the fortress have been preserved in the parish garden as horseshoe-shaped ditches and ramparts, which are up to 5 metres high in places. In Úboč, you therefore encounter not only ecclesiastical architectural history, but also visible traces of a fortified past.

Several notable vernacular buildings add to the village setting. These include a masonry granary built from the walls of the demolished Church of St. Wenceslas, one of the surviving structures of everyday village life in Úboč.

Memorial Tree, Hiking and Cycling

The Jehlíkova lípa memorial tree is a place of remembrance in its own right. The linden tree stands on the dam of the pond above the mill and is approximately 350 years old. It therefore offers a distinctly different accent for exploring Úboč than the church, fortress and vernacular architecture: here, the focus is on a single natural monument whose location is also connected with the pond and the mill.

Marked trails also pass through the village. A green-marked hiking trail, 15.5 km long, runs from the ruins of Netřeb via Úboč to the Koráb lookout tower. The route thus connects three different points and is a specific option for planning a longer hike. If you prefer travelling by bicycle, the blue-marked Chudenice cycling circuit runs through Úboč between Němčice and Všepadly. It is approximately 55 km long and has a different focus from the hiking trail: Instead of connecting ruins, the village and a lookout tower, it forms a larger cycling loop.

Getting to Úboč

When planning your journey, you should take the local transport situation into account. A Class III road runs through Úboč; the connection to a higher-class road is located in Němčice. There is no railway in the village.
