Koloveč between Crafts and History

Koloveč brings together crafts, local history and experiences of the surrounding landscape in a compact area. The Muzeum techniky a řemesel Koloveč presents 67 complete craft workshops and trades, as well as twelve technical exhibitions. Clocks and mechanical musical instruments, prams and toys, electrical appliances, kitchen equipment, animal traps, exhibits on milk processing and a fire station demonstrate the breadth of the collection. Everyday objects, technical subjects and various trades are presented side by side; visitors can focus on individual areas of interest or combine several parts of the collection. For registered groups of more than ten people, the museum offers a demonstration on the potter’s wheel.

The Volf family pottery workshop in Koloveč has been producing traditional folk ceramics since 1785 and is still in operation; in Koloveč, the pottery craft has been passed from father to son for seven generations. The workshop therefore represents a tradition that is not merely remembered as part of history, but continues to this day.

Church, Town Hall and Local History

A major fire destroyed a total of 51 houses, the town hall, the school and the church in 1729. The church in Koloveč was subsequently rebuilt in the Baroque style; reconstruction was completed in 1732. Its church tower is 35 metres high, and the interior contains an original sculpture of the Stations of the Cross. The present town hall was rebuilt between 1826 and 1830 after the previous town hall burned down, and is now used as a library and clubroom. The Liberation Monument was restored in 1990 in the centre of the village, just four metres from its original location. The village centre thus preserves traces of destruction, reconstruction and later remembrance.

Cycle Path and Views

The Plzeň–Regensburg cycle path passes through Koloveč. Along it, you can visit interesting places around Koloveč on foot or by bicycle. For planning a day out, this route therefore offers an opportunity for exercise and exploring the area. The Kolovečská vyhlídka viewpoint offers views of the panoramas of Šumava and Český les, including Javor, Ostrý, Čerchov, Haltrava, Zvon, Přimda and Sedmihoří. The viewpoint complements the local history with a broad view across the landscape.

Nearby lies Netřeb, surrounded by deciduous forest with yew trees and rare woodland flora, including Turk’s cap lilies. The combination of the viewpoint and the surrounding woodland offers different ways to experience the outdoors: one place directs your gaze into the distance, while the other focuses on trees and plant life.

Traditions and Events

The traditional play “Přemílání bab na mladá děvčata” attracts several thousand visitors. In addition, the municipality of Koloveč, local associations, and the primary and nursery schools organise numerous regular cultural and social events every year.
