Mrákov

Historic Mrákov and the Church of St. Lawrence

Mrákov was one of the eleven oldest Choden villages in the southwestern border region of Bohemia. In the past, the Choden people of Mrákov served as guards protecting the country’s border and the trade routes to Domažlice. This historical role explains an important part of the region’s identity, but it should be understood as belonging to the past.

The village is home to the Church of St. Lawrence. It was built between 1811 and 1813 on the site of an earlier chapel in the village square and designed as a three-aisled building with a prism-shaped tower on the façade. In addition to the church, the protected complex includes a mortuary chapel, the enclosing wall with two gates and a wicket gate, a cast-iron cross, and the associated grounds. A visit therefore need not be limited to the church building alone: the enclosure and the other components are also part of the protected ensemble.

Folklore, Traditional Costumes, and Festive Traditions

The Choden tradition is preserved and developed in Mrákov by the Chodský soubor Mrákov ensemble. The folklore association preserves Choden songs, passed down through singing and dancing, as well as the traditional costumes of Lower Chodenland. Chodský soubor Mrákov was founded in 1961 by a group of folklore enthusiasts. For travelers who want to experience regional culture through more than just buildings, this focus provides access to the songs, dances, and clothing of Chodenland.

One special event in the annual calendar is the Chodská hyjta festival. It takes place in Mrákov on the first Saturday after August 10 and features performances by participants from Chodenland and abroad. Further Historical Sites

The Chapel of St. Wenceslas was built in the town center in 1863. The village square is also home to a memorial house associated with visits by Božena Němcová, Karel Havlíček, František Palacký, and F. L. Rieger. This wording refers to the traditional attribution of these visits and thus preserves their historical context.

The farmstead at Starý Klíčov No. 80 preserves a timber-framed residential building. It was built no later than the first half of the 19th century and is demonstrably documented as existing by 1838. The farmstead is considered one of the best-preserved examples of the development of the log house in Chodenland. For visitors interested in cultural history, it complements the religious and folkloric themes with an example of traditional architecture.

Lomeček: Outdoor Swimming Pool, Ice-Skating Area, and Underwater Views

Lomeček near Mrákov is a former quarry that serves as a natural outdoor swimming pool in summer and an ice-skating area in winter. As a result, a different experience takes center stage depending on the season: in summer, it is about water; in winter, about ice.

The underwater observation cabin is particularly unusual. It is located at a depth of 8 meters and offers views of underwater life through several circular windows, each with a diameter of half a meter. The cabin can be visited with a guide by no more than four people at a time. This limitation is part of the specific visiting arrangement and should be taken into account when planning such an excursion.
