Hlohová – Landscape, Church and Historical Traces

Hlohová combines a gently undulating landscape with an unusually dense succession of cultural and historical traces. The village lies on the right bank of the Zubřina stream, just above its confluence with the Radbuza. This makes it a destination where the landscape is more than just a backdrop: Hlohová lies in the upper part of a small valley formed by water diverted from the Chmelnice into the Zubřina.

St. Giles’ Church with Older Traces

The Church of St. Giles is the cultural focal point. It is a Baroque church built between 1764 and 1766. At the same time, it preserves the presbytery of an older, probably Gothic church. Three stone floor slabs add to this historical layering; one of them bears the coat of arms of the Videršpergár family. The slabs thus make the older layer visible within the Baroque church building. For your visit, this means above all that the building does not tell the story of just one construction phase, but combines Baroque architecture with visible evidence of an older sacred history.

Former Fortress and Visible Traces of Fortification

The former fortifications are also part of the area’s historic character. The former fortress in Hlohová was first mentioned in writing in 1368. Parts of the moat and rampart of the former fortress are visible within the cadastral territory of Hlohová. Its historical status is important here: these are traces of a former fortress, not an attraction described as a present-day fortress complex.

Pasecký Mill and Jirásek’s Lucerna

Another notable feature is the Pasecký Mill complex. It comprises a mill, farm buildings, a bakery and the remains of an enclosing wall with a chapel. According to tradition, the Pasecký Mill served as the model for the mill in Jirásek’s play Lucerna. This attribution should explicitly be understood as a tradition, but it makes the site an interesting point of contact between built heritage and Czech literature.
