Úsilov – Local history and routes between wooded ridges

Úsilov combines a well-preserved village character with a landscape where natural and cultural themes complement each other directly. The village lies in a broad basin between the wooded ridges of the Chudenická vrchovina and the Švihovská vrchovina. The Dubovka flows through Úsilov, alongside the larger of two ponds built on the river and a network of routes for hiking and cycling. A local history with traces of a fortress

The earliest written mention of Úsilov dates from 1379. In the late 14th century, Úsilov belonged to Švihov Castle. The history of Úsilov Fortress probably also dates back to this period: its original construction is placed in the second half of the 14th century.

The oldest part of the fortress is a tower-like building. Its original form was altered when it was converted into a granary. A square tower and a short Renaissance wing were added later. The fortress was once surrounded by a moat, of which no remains have survived. The last major alterations took place in 1930. Drawings from the late 17th century are also informative for its historical classification: they show the fortress under the names “Ausylow” and “Twrz Ausylow”. This makes it possible to trace the development of the village through written references, historical forms of its name and structural changes, without equating the past with an unchanged present-day condition.

Hiking and cycling with routes of different character

A green-marked hiking trail runs through Úsilov. Another hiking trail crosses the village from east to west. Those wishing to explore the surrounding area will also find a route there that climbs through forests to Mount Koráb. There is a lookout tower and a restaurant on the mountain. A stay in Úsilov can therefore be organised around routes in the village as well as a hike through woodland landscapes and up to a viewpoint.

Two different sections are also documented for cycling. Cycle Route 2192 runs through the northeastern part of the Úsilov municipal area and through the village. Cycle Route 2193, by contrast, leads through wooded areas in the western part of the municipal area. Public transport to Úsilov is provided by bus services.
