Vidice – Sedmihoří Nature Park and St. Apollonia

The Landscape Around Vidice

The predominantly wooded Sedmihoří Nature Park lies within the municipality of Vidice. Its landscape is defined by a depression surrounded to the south, west, and north by a ring of 11 peaks. The highest peak is Racovský vrch, at 619 m. The depression and the ring of peaks give the wooded area a clearly recognizable form. Forests, lower-lying terrain, and the surrounding elevations together shape the character of the nature park. Racovský vrch serves as the distinctive elevation reference within this ring. This landscape structure makes Sedmihoří a destination in its own right for anyone who wants to combine trails, forests, and varied terrain during their stay in western Bohemia.

The Sedmihoří educational trail runs through the municipality. It has 12 information panels that accompany the route with fixed points of interest and complement the nature experience with information available on site. A marked yellow hiking trail is also available for walks. It runs toward Kakov via Racovský vrch to Mezholezy. Those who prefer to explore the surroundings by bicycle will find another designated connection in marked cycling route 2242: it leads via Bernartice, Sychrov, and Vidice onward toward route 2241. Thus, the municipality offers an educational trail with information panels, a yellow-marked hiking route, and a designated cycling route as different ways to explore the landscape.

St. Apollonia and the Pilgrimage Tradition

St. Apollonia Church stands north of Vidice in the fields along the road to Bernartice. It was probably built in the 17th century as a Baroque pilgrimage church. Its interior contains furnishings dating from the second half of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. Its location in the fields north of Vidice connects the building with the surrounding landscape, while its Baroque origins and preserved furnishings define its cultural and historical character.

The building's history is also part of the character of the village: the façade and roof covering of St. Apollonia Church were restored in 1994–1995. Vidice hosts the first pilgrimage of the year every year. During the pilgrimage celebrations in 2023, a Holy Mass was held in St. Apollonia Church. The church therefore brings together its construction period, historical furnishings, later restoration, and a pilgrimage tradition that continues into the present day. St. Apollonia represents both Baroque ecclesiastical history and a religious custom that remains part of the annual cycle in Vidice.
