Spáňov between Landscape and History

Spáňov is a destination for travelers who do not wish to view landscape and history separately. The municipality lies on the boundary between the Všerubská vrchovina uplands and the Podčeskoleská pahorkatina hills at an elevation of 440 meters above sea level. As a result, two landscape areas meet here, while the surrounding area offers cultural and historical sights, viewpoints, and a cycling route to discover.

Landscape between Forest and Pond

On the western side of Spáňov lies the slightly elevated Domažlický háj woodland. There is also a pond on the southwestern edge of the village, used for fire protection and fish farming. Both places are concrete landscape features of the municipality, but they serve different functions. The railway line between Domažlice and Brno is also important for orientation in the area: it runs through Spáňov.

A Small Chapel with an Unusual Floor Plan

A late Baroque chapel from the second half of the 18th century stands on the village square. Its hexagonal structure has a bell tower and houses a folk painting of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. It is precisely the combination of its architectural form, period, and interior furnishings that makes the chapel an independent cultural detail of Spáňov. Visitors who wish to take in not only larger sights but also regional ecclesiastical architecture during a visit to the village will find a clear connection to the history of the village here.

Rýzmberk Castle Ruins and the History of the Pass

The Rýzmberk Castle Ruins, with an observation tower, are located in the vicinity of Spáňov. The castle was founded in the second half of the 13th century on a high hill near Kdyně. Its historical significance lay not only in its hilltop location: Rýzmberk controlled the Všerubský Pass, through which the important trade route to Bavaria ran. A visit to the ruins can therefore be combined with a specific chapter in the region’s history of transport and rule.

A Gloriet, Observation Towers, and Cycling

The Klobouk u Kouta Gloriet stands on a hill between the villages of Kout na Šumavě and Spáňov. It was built by the Kout estate in 1723. The small structure was presumably intended to enliven the park-like landscape and provide the estate’s owners with a place to rest while enjoying a beautiful view of Kout Castle and its picturesque surroundings. The Koráb observation tower in the vicinity of Spáňov also offers views of the Domažlicko region, the Český les, Šumava, and Bavaria. From the tower, the view therefore extends from Domažlicko to Bavaria. For active days, the completed Kout–Spáňov cycling route is of interest. It forms part of the planned Domažlice–Kdyně cycling route. The section is therefore complete, while the overall connection is considered planned.
