Nový Jičín District
Nový Jičín District combines protected river landscapes, unusual museums and historic buildings with experiences that can be easily arranged into different kinds of holiday days. You can explore nature trails along the water, discover regional history in several collections, or experience interactive technical elements for children and accompanying adults at the Tatra Truck Museum in Kopřivnice.
Water Landscapes and Trails in Poodří
One defining natural feature is Poodří. The landscape follows the Oder River corridor between Fulnek and Nový Jičín and is connected with the Poodří Protected Landscape Area. In the town of Studénka, the Kotvice Educational Trail leads through meadows, floodplain forests, ponds, pools, waterways and along the Oder River. The trail is considered easy and suitable for children; at the same time, part of it passes through the Kotvice Nature Reserve, which is regarded as an important nesting site for waterfowl. The Kotvice Educational Trail is just under 6 km long, offering a clearly defined nature experience without the character of a demanding mountain hike.
Another way to experience the landscape is the Krajinou povodní Educational Trail between Jeseník nad Odrou and Suchdol nad Odrou. For cyclists, the Okolo Poodří route runs along the eastern edge of the protected landscape area from Ostrava to Jeseník nad Odrou and follows the Krakow–Vienna Greenways cycling route for the most part. One described cycling tour also leads to a viewpoint overlooking the surrounding forests and Štramberk and passes the Kamenárka Nature Monument. This makes it possible to combine tranquil water landscapes with active excursions without reducing the region to just one type of travel experience.
Chateau, Museums and Regional Stories
Kunín Chateau is an important Baroque chateau in northern Moravia and Silesia. It was built between 1725 and 1734 according to plans by the architect Jan Lukáš Hildebrandt. A visit can also be combined with practical accessibility information: both floors are accessible to wheelchair users with assistance.
The Novojičínsko Museum comprises nine branches open to the public. Its collections document the region’s natural environment and society, with holdings from geology, archaeology, history, ethnography, art, textiles and fashion. In Kopřivnice, the Muzeum Tatra Kopřivnice operates the Tatra Truck Museum, the Tatra Passenger Car Museum and the Slovenská Strela Depot. The Tatra Truck Museum displays 81 Tatra trucks and chassis in an exhibition area of more than 5,000 square metres. Interactive technical elements are aimed at children and accompanying adults.
Special Experiences for Different Holiday Days
In Nový Jičín, Město klobouků presents the individual stages of hat production. Visitors can try on more than 400 real hats and an additional 40 virtual models. VR headsets also reveal parts of the TONAK factory that are normally inaccessible. In a creative workshop, you can take on the role of fashion designers yourself. This complements traditional museum visits with a practical and playful format.
Mining is also represented by its own experience: the tour of the Flaschar Mine is said to be 300 metres long and last 90 minutes. Those who prefer to discover regional traditions through cuisine will find a specific connection to the local speciality Štramberské uši in Štramberk. Between the chateau, museum, workshop, mine and landscape, you can therefore tailor your stay differently according to age, weather and your desired pace.
