Vražné between Mendel history and protected landscapes

Vražné combines notable memorial sites connected with Johann Gregor Mendel with two distinct landscape areas. The Poodří Protected Landscape Area extends into the southeastern part of Vražné, while the Odersko Nature Park reaches into the northern part. Another way to get to know the town is the walking route “Vycházková trasa obcí Vražné”.

The town’s history becomes particularly tangible at the birthplace of Johann Gregor Mendel. It is registered as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and bears registration no. 41981/8-1698. The Church of St Peter and Paul is also one of the important Mendel sites: Johann Gregor Mendel was baptised there on 22 July 1822 under the name Johann.

Mendel Museum and discoveries for different age groups

The Mendel Museum presents an exhibition about the life of Johann Gregor Mendel and the rural region of Moravian Kravařsko, where he grew up. Several rooms are also dedicated to genetics and breeding. The exhibition includes a gallery with a painted biographical comic and a Mendel statue on the ground floor. Visitors who would like to explore the museum visit in greater depth can arrange a guided tour in advance by telephone.

A playful addition is the encrypted outdoor game “Johann”. It is aimed at visitors to Mendel’s birthplace and tourists in Vražné. The game combines a walk with solving encrypted tasks, introducing participants to Mendel and places to which he returned. It can be played at any time of year. The route is accessible to cyclists and parents with prams, allowing an active exploration of the town to be combined with a narrative treasure hunt.

Cultural monuments and nature experiences in the town

Several places away from the museum also tell the story of Vražné’s history. The original village school was used from 1795 onwards; J. G. Mendel attended it during his childhood from 1831 to 1833. Mendel’s horse chestnut tree was planted by J. G. Mendel and his sister Therese and has a purpose-built seating area. The Chapel of St Florian has a small bell tower dating from 1805 and a sandstone cross. It was restored and consecrated in 1998.

In front of the Church of St Peter and Paul stands a sandstone cross with a relief of the Virgin Mary. It is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and bears the number 8-4078. For an active break, the recreation area at Pod Emauzy Pond offers facilities for small-sided football and volleyball. The documented impressions of Vražné thus range from biography and architectural heritage to walks, games and landscapes.
