Odry: Heritage Zone, Slate Mines and Nature Park

Odry combines urban history with unusual insights into slate mining and a forested landscape. This creates different focal points for families, culture enthusiasts and active travellers: historic buildings in the town, an educational trail through a former mining area, underground tunnels, viewpoints and activities for mountain bikers.

Historical Traces in the Centre

Odry’s urban heritage zone is bounded by the natural line of the former town walls. Its core is formed by a stylistically diverse ensemble of town houses with late medieval, Renaissance and early Baroque influences. The bell of St Bartholomew’s Church offers a particularly tangible connection to the town’s history: it was cast in 1374.

Odry’s medieval bastion, part of the medieval fortifications, has also been opened to tourists. Visitors can view a collection of beer glasses, bricks and tiles there. At the Muzeum Oderska, the permanent exhibition “Ó Odra” is dedicated to the Odra River and life around its course. The cultural spectrum therefore ranges from architectural heritage and ecclesiastical history to everyday objects and the importance of the river.

Slate Mining as an Experience

The K Flascharovu dolu educational trail is approximately 3.5 kilometres long and has 15 information stations. It leads through the Nový Svět mining area, where seven old slate mines or mining facilities have been preserved. The trail is suitable for families with children and combines outdoor exercise with information about the region’s mining history.

The Flascharův důl mine is a particular highlight. It is one of only two publicly accessible slate mines in the Czech Republic. Visitors can explore 400 metres of underground tunnels there. Forest Landscape and Broad Views

The Pohoř–Olšová viewing platform is 13 metres high. From there, the view extends across the Moravian Gate to the Moravian-Silesian Beskids. The viewpoint thus provides an open landscape accent alongside the rather enclosed spaces of the mines and historic buildings.

In the region around Odry, the Oderské vrchy were designated a nature park in 1994. Its forested landscape, with numerous natural attractions, invites visitors to go for walks all year round.
