Bítov: Chapel, Forests and Trails

Bítov combines a small cultural and historical feature with varied trails and a forest-rich landscape. The central Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, a challenging cycling route, a yellow-marked hiking trail, and local traditions give the village different facets. When planning your accommodation, you can therefore decide whether you mainly want to experience culture, outdoor activity, observing nature, or the character of the village.

Chapel, Stations of the Cross, and History

The central Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk in Bítov was built before 1880. Mass is celebrated there once a month. A new Stations of the Cross route to the chapel has also been created in Bítov. Several religious and local points of reference are thus concentrated in this location, and they can be discovered independently of a longer hike.

The older history of the municipality’s territory also remains visible, although not every connection has been conclusively clarified: a fortified settlement was located in the cadastral area of Bítov. Based on the place name Hradisko, it is assumed that it stood between the village and the former Bítov Mill. However, its exact location has not yet been established. The historic site should therefore be understood as a traditional and presumed part of the village’s history, not as a clearly located point of interest.

Cycling and Hiking with Different Characteristics

For a more athletic exploration, the more challenging and partly difficult cycling route 6192 passes through Bítov. It connects Bílovec with a recreational facility on the Porubka.

The Bílovecká padesátka hiking route follows a different course. It runs along the yellow-marked hiking trail from the chapel below Bítov through Bítov to the Sezina Valley. This makes it possible to view the chapel, village, and valley area as part of one continuous trail connection. If you would like to combine different interests, you can therefore choose between a designated cycling route and a separate hiking route.

Forest, Water, and Wet Habitats

Forests surround Bítov on almost all sides. They offer good conditions for picking mushrooms and gathering wild fruit. This describes the natural character of the place more specifically than a general landscape term and opens up a peaceful, seasonal way of exploring the area.

At the Bítovský mlýn site and immediately below it lies a partly waterlogged area with lush vegetation. It is a local biocentre or biocorridor. In Vesník, the “I. Pond” is the second pond in a cascade of four ponds.

Local Festivals and Traditional Customs

Rybí hody is a recurring local festival in Vesník near Bítov. In Bítov, the frying of eggs is locally known as “snožky” and is a tradition passed down by parents and grandparents.
