Discover Suchdol Nad Odrou

Cultural history that remains visible in the town

Suchdol Nad Odrou combines an unusually rich local history with landscapes where nature and human activity meet. This is particularly evident at the Museum of the Moravian Brethren: it is housed in a preserved small Kravařsko farmstead with an enclosed courtyard, a residential building on the right and farm buildings on the left. There, visitors can see how people lived and worked in Kravařsko a hundred years ago.

The museum also tells the story of the exile of 280 inhabitants of Suchdol nad Odrou to Herrnhut in Saxony in the 18th century. There, they renewed the Unity of the Brethren and founded mission settlements in all parts of the world. The Western exhibition is dedicated to Bohumil Kašpárek, nicknamed “Hospodář”, and the history of the Czechoslovak Pony Express. A military history exhibition deals with the investigation of aircraft crashes in North Moravia and Silesia, particularly those from the air battle of 17 December 1944.

The religious buildings also provide the town with distinctive historical points of reference. The Church of the Holy Trinity is a single-nave late Renaissance building constructed between 1605 and 1614. Its Baroque-shaped, artistically striking tower roof and double tower sphere define its appearance. The Evangelical Church was built between 1852 and 1858 under Senior Szepessy in the arcade style, based on a design by the Viennese architect Förster. Its interior furnishings, preserved in the original style, include the altar, pulpit, organ and baptismal font. The Baroque Catholic parish house was built in 1730 based on a design by the Viennese architect J. L. Hildebrandt from 1730.

Local history and living traditions

Anyone wishing to trace the development of Suchdol nad Odrou will find an exhibition on the history of the market town at the Municipal Museum. It covers the prehistory and first settlement of the local region, the Middle Ages and the founding of Suchdol nad Odrou and the village district of Kletné. Other topics include galena ore mining, the Teltschik family of judges, the economic development of the originally agricultural community, railway construction, industrial development and the history of the market town up to 1945, including notable local figures.

A prior arrangement is required to visit the Municipal Museum; the tour lasts approximately 60 minutes. Another local tradition is the annual ride of the Czechoslovak Pony Express. This combines an interest in regional history with a custom that remains part of the townscape to this day.

Landscape, paths and water

Part of the cadastral area of Suchdol nad Odrou lies within the Poodří Protected Landscape Area. With a little caution and attention, unique plant communities and rare animal species can be observed there. The surroundings of Kletné are suitable for recreation and pleasant walks. Along the way, visitors can see remnants of former ore mining and enjoy views across the valley of the Moravian Gate.

The “Krajinou povodní” educational trail runs across meadows and unpaved paths. It can be used on foot or by bicycle, and in suitable snow conditions also on cross-country skis. The Oder is also navigable year-round from Suchdol nad Odrou. Depending on your interests, historical exhibitions, walks, nature observation, cycling and waterscapes can therefore all be combined, without having to limit your trip to just one type of experience.
