Příbor: Culture, Educational Trails and Cycling Routes

Příbor combines a diverse historic townscape with routes to ponds and through the countryside. If you would like to combine culture, short explorations and cycling, you will find various starting points here for planning your trip.

Culture and Architectural History in Příbor

At CETRAT, the exhibition includes Příbor slippers made using an archaic knitting technique over a form. There are also objects made from roots, grasses, cattails, pine-needle fibres, straw and horsehair. The birthplace of Sigmund Freud now serves as the Sigmund Freud Museum and houses an interactive museum exhibition. The museum also presents the exhibition “Sigmund Freud – člověk” there.

The Piarist Monastery is designated as an immovable cultural monument. The renovated rooms in the west wing are used for social events, weddings, concerts and lectures. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a late Gothic, three-nave building dating from around 1400. The Church of St Valentine was remodelled into its present Baroque form between 1760 and 1766; its high altar is decorated with a silver-plated relief depicting events from the life of Saint Valentine. The Church of the Holy Cross and the cross there are also listed as national cultural monuments.

The Novojičínsko Museum, which includes a memorial hall for Sigmund Freud, is also located in the Piarist Monastery. The former refectory was reopened after complete reconstruction. As a result, the complex brings together architectural history, the memory of Freud and contemporary cultural use. Those who wish to organise their city walk thematically can view monument preservation, the museum and the event spaces here as different facets of the same place.

Educational Trails between the Town and the Ponds

The Borovecké rybníky near Příbor are two small ponds. Their banks are home to the protected Turk’s cap lily and the early-spring snowdrop. The Borovecké rybníky educational trail is located in the Borovec district of the town of Příbor and has six information panels around Borovec Pond. When the weather is suitable, swimming is possible at the weir near the Borovecké rybníky.

For exploring the town area, there is the Příbor urban conservation area educational trail with eight stations. It starts and ends at Sigmund Freud Square. An information panel with an audio guide in Czech, English and German stands there. The educational trail is suitable for pedestrians, cyclists and parents with children in pushchairs.

Cycling Routes with Different Distances

The 10 km Příborský okruh starts at Sigmund Freud Square. It connects with the educational trail around the Borovecké rybníky, then returns to Příbor and leads to the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The 17 km cycling route 6039 runs from Kopřivnice via Příbor and Skotnice to Nová Horka and provides access to the Poodří Protected Landscape Area. The two route lengths give you a clear point of reference when planning your excursions and choosing the location of your accommodation according to your preferred focus.
