Skotnice: Geology, Village History and Excursions along the Lubina

Skotnice combines the character of traditional rural buildings with unique geological and cultural-historical discoveries. This village character has been preserved along the Lubina River. As a result, landscape, regional history and opportunities for active or varied days come together here within a compact thematic area.

Village History and Technical Heritage

A good starting point for exploring the local history is the “Muzeum venkovského života a zemědělství”. It first opened to the public in mid-April 2011 and is located in the attic of the Skotnice municipal office. Another notable insight into the region’s past is provided by the Skotnice water mill. Its technical equipment has been uniquely preserved; the mill was built in the second half of the 19th century and was probably constructed on older foundations.

The historic villagescape also includes a three-storey masonry wayside shrine from the first half of the 19th century. It complements the larger testimonies to the village’s history with a single preserved structure in the village and broadens the view of the various forms of regional architectural and commemorative culture.

Hončova hůrka as a Geological Highlight

The abandoned quarry landscape on Hončova hůrka forms a prominent feature of the landscape. Hončova hůrka is registered by the Czech Geological Survey as an interesting geological locality and is part of the Podbeskydí National Geopark. At the same time, it is considered a notable mineralogical locality at an elevation of 336 metres above sea level. For orientation on site, it is important to note that a field road leads to the summit.

From Hončova hůrka, the view extends south towards Příbor and west into the Lubina valley and over Skotnice. The locality can be reached by car without any access restrictions; such access reaches to within 250 metres of the locality. Those wishing to explore the geological focus in greater depth can also visit the “Geologická naučná stezka Skotnice”, a 1.37-kilometre educational trail maintained by the Podbeskydí Geopark and Spolek Hájenka. With its length, the educational trail provides a clearly defined framework for geological exploration.

Active and Family-Friendly Experiences

In the locality of Skorotín, there is a publicly accessible sports and recreation area with a paved sports field. Football, volleyball, football tennis and basketball can be played there. In Skotnice, the Komunitní centrum “Partnerství” also has an outdoor classroom and a labyrinth. On the banks of the Lubina, in the Skotnice locality of Skorotín, there is also a multi-purpose children’s playground. The range therefore extends from several ball sports to a riverside playground.

Skotnice on Cycling and Discovery Routes

For cyclists, cycle route No. 6039 provides a clear point of reference: it runs through Kopřivnice, Příbor, Skotnice, Sedlnice and Studénka, and thus passes through Skotnice. This makes it possible to combine geological, village and cultural-historical themes with a cycle route extending beyond the region, without reducing the village to just one attraction.
