Kunín – Castle, Museums and Cycle Routes

Kunín combines an impressive castle history with small museums, a church conceived for people of different denominations and several ways to explore the surrounding area on foot or by bicycle. If your family has diverse interests, you can enjoy a varied stay combining historic rooms, regional heritage, a cycling tour and a visit to the café.

Kunín Castle as a Cultural Centre

Kunín Castle is a Baroque château built between 1726 and 1734 for the Counts of Harrach according to plans by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. The tour leads through rooms that were formerly furnished as guest rooms and bedrooms, as well as former classrooms of the castle school. The tour therefore presents not only representative rooms but also the castle’s educational and everyday history. The route is complemented by a picture gallery, a hunting room, a ladies’ room, a large dining room and music and dance rooms.

The guided tour of Kunín Castle lasts 90 minutes and is intended for groups of at least 3 and no more than 20 people. This fixed duration and group size are relevant to your daily planning if you would like to combine your castle visit with other stops in Kunín. Kunín Castle Park is fully accessible to wheelchair users.

Church and Museums with Regional Stories

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is part of the local history. Its foundation stone was laid in 1810; it was the first work of the young master builder Franz Biela. The church was intended for all denominations and was linked to the interdenominational educational concept of the nearby castle school. It therefore provides an independent complement to the castle tour and makes visible a historical idea that is also connected with the educational history of the town.

Two rooms at the Muzeum starého Kunewaldu present the history of the municipality of Kunín. On display are original documents, interesting finds from the municipality and traditional costumes donated by German residents who were expelled after the Second World War. The collection also includes objects connected with Skoronice and the Kunín parish. The natural history cabinet provides another thematic focus. It houses a newly arranged mineralogical and palaeontological exhibition assembled by Bronislav Novosad from Kunín for the restored castle.

Cycling and Hiking Around Kunín

Kunín forms part of several signposted recreational routes. The 40-kilometre Okolo Poodří cycle route passes Kunín Castle, among other places, or includes it as a point of interest. The route runs mainly along asphalt cycle paths with no or only light car traffic. The Jantarová stezka cycle route also passes through Kunín. This gives you a choice between an expressly 40-kilometre route connected with the castle and another cycle route that runs directly through the town.

For a hike, you can follow the Novojičínská kopretina educational trail from the railway station in Nový Jičín towards Kunín. A specific event mentioned for 2026 is also the announcement by the Municipality of Kunín: the traditional Otevírání Poodří event was scheduled for Saturday, 16 May 2026, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; each year, it symbolically opens the region’s tourism season.

Getting Around and Taking Short Breaks Locally

The “Kunín, zdravotní středisko” bus stop is located directly in front of the entrance to Sedlákův trh. Sedlákův trh has a small café where you can enjoy coffee and something sweet after shopping. This gives a visit to the town, in addition to the castle, church and museum, a specific place to stop for a break, without implying any particular accommodation offer.
