Mankovice between cultural history and the Odra landscape

Mankovice combines a multi-layered local history with notable sites of remembrance and a landscape along the Odra. The historic Amber Road ran along the Odra corridor through Mankovice. This route gives the town a special historical connection that you can explore alongside ecclesiastical monuments, a themed park and a nature monument.

The most important monument in Mankovice is the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (Kostel Navštívení Panny Marie). It was built in 1795 in place of an older, dilapidated wooden church. Its history therefore also represents the transformation of an older sacred building into the church that is now regarded as the town’s most important monument.

Opposite the church, on a small meadow between the houses, stands a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It was erected in 1761. Restored in 2023, the statue became part of Moravských bratří Park, thus connecting a historic site of remembrance with the later-designed park.

Another cultural and historical point of reference is the Kaplička Panny Marie chapel, also known as Weißova kaple. In 1818, it already existed or was just being completed. Since 19 April 2024, the chapel has been protected as a cultural monument. The cautious dating and its current protection status are important details of its history. In this way, the chapel complements the church with a second sacred building whose place in the town’s history remains open to precise chronological classification.

Moravských bratří Park

In Moravských bratří Park, the history of the Moravian Brethren is presented on information boards in three thematic sections. The first covers the period from Jan Hus to the exile of Jan Amos Komenský. The second describes the journey to Herrnhut. The third focuses on life in the missions and on Matouš Stach in Greenland. The park therefore offers several historical perspectives rather than showing just a single memorial site.

The park has drinking water from a restored drinking fountain and an original well. Both wells are bordered with stones from the local banks of the Odra. When it opened, the park was accessible to visitors around the clock and provided space for recreation and relaxation. Natural landscape along the old Odra

The boundary of the CHKO Poodří Protected Landscape Area begins at Mankovice railway station. The Meandry staré Odry nature monument is also important for understanding the town’s landscape setting. Together, these references lead from the town’s history and monuments to the protected landscapes along the Odra. Thus, the natural area has two distinct points of reference: the protected-area boundary at the railway station and the nature monument on the old Odra.
