Nymburk District between Elbe floodplains, nature and culture

Nymburk District combines the flat landscape of the Elbe with remarkable natural monuments, medieval history and an unusually diverse range of excursion destinations. Libický luh is a floodplain landscape southeast of the confluence of the Elbe and Cidlina rivers.

Protected landscapes with their own character

Hrabanovská černava is a national nature monument. It protects a Polabian fen with wetland and meadow communities as well as rare species. Písečný přesyp u Píst offers a completely different landscape impression: The area preserves open continental dune grasslands and is one of the few places in the Czech Republic where the substrate is still visibly moving. For planning your trip, this provides an interesting choice between wet floodplain and fen landscapes and a rare, dynamic sandy site.

Open-air museum and the history of the region

One particularly distinctive cultural site is the Polabské národopisné muzeum Přerov nad Labem, one of the oldest regional open-air museums in Europe. Its origins date back to 1895. The grounds include almost 40 folk-architecture buildings, including nine residential houses, seven granaries and four barns. The furnished interiors illustrate village life in the Polabí region from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. This makes a visit an informative complement to excursions into nature and helps visitors understand the region's way of life not only through its buildings, but also through their historical use.

The Vlastivědné muzeum Nymburk focuses on the nature of the Polabí region, prehistoric archaeology and the history of Nymburk. In Poděbrady, the Památník krále Jiřího z Poděbrad is located in the oldest part of the medieval castle. Gothic wall paintings and hundreds of exhibits explain the 14th and 15th centuries. The history of Libice nad Cidlinou also reaches far back: Slavník had a fortified complex built there with a mint, a stone church and a princely palace. The Slavník fortified settlement in Libice is a national cultural monument.

The medieval town walls of Nymburk are well preserved. Other national cultural monuments include the Nymburk Crematorium and the Poděbrady Hydroelectric Power Plant. The tower of Nymburk's Church of St. Giles offers views and adds a vertical perspective to a town tour.

Excursion destinations for different days of travel

ZOO Chleby is home to more than 180 animal species. Visitors can buy food and feed selected animal species. From Nymburk, the zoo can be reached by bus route 673, which connects with passenger and express trains from Prague as well as passenger trains from Kolín. Another excursion destination is Loučeň Chateau, which is open year-round and, with its Labyrintharium, offers twelve labyrinths and mazes. At Botanicus, you can try traditional crafts and learn more about their history. The on-site dining hall serves dishes partly prepared from produce grown in its own organic gardens.

Nymburk also has a distinctive culinary profile. Pivovar Nymburk brewery produces eight pale beers as well as a semi-dark specialty beer, a dark lager and a chocolate-flavoured dark lager. Nymburk is also located on the Elbe Cycle Route, which connects the Czech Republic with Germany.
