Between the Lookout Tower and Local History

Hrubý Jeseník combines impressive views over the Elbe Lowland with an unusually long local history. The Romanka lookout tower is an unusual observation tower in the Elbe Lowland in the municipality of Hrubý Jeseník. The municipality brings together two distinct themes: Romanka as a technical structure with a public viewing platform and the development of an old settlement in the Nymburk area.

Romanka: Tower and Viewpoint

Romanka combines the function of a telecommunications tower with that of a public lookout tower. The tower opened on 28 March 2003. Telecommunications and a public viewpoint are brought together here in a single structure. This makes Romanka interesting not only for its views, but also for its technical purpose.

The Romanka viewing platform is located approximately 26 metres above the ground and can be reached via 116 steps. When visiting the platform, also allow for the climb to the platform as a separate part of the experience and your daily planning. From Hrubý Jeseník, Romanka can be reached on foot via short country paths; by car, you can get almost all the way to the tower, and parking is available. Those who prefer short country paths therefore choose a different approach from visitors who want to drive as close to the tower as possible. This allows you to plan your visit to the lookout tower as a short walk or as a destination reached by car, depending on your daily plans, without deriving a specific journey time from this.

Traces of a Long History

Hrubý Jeseník is one of the oldest municipalities in the Nymburk area and was first mentioned in writing in 1088. The opening in 2003 thus marks a significantly more recent point in time than the written mention of the municipality in 1088. The settlement originally consisted of Jeseník and Jeseníček; Jeseníček later became part of Oskořínek. In addition to Romanka, the development of the settlement is therefore also part of the character of Hrubý Jeseník. The lookout tower and local history set different accents: here, a technical structure is the focus, while there, it is the development of an old municipality.

Another historical focal point is the church in Hrubý Jeseník dedicated to Saint Wenceslas. Its history dates back to the middle of the 14th century, while its present form dates from 1769. The church thus combines a long history with a present-day appearance from the 18th century. At the Stations of the Cross, an ensemble of sculptures and a chapel adds to the cultural character of the place. This ensemble is among the cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. The church and the Stations of the Cross set different emphases: here, a sacred building with a long history, and there, an ensemble of sculptures and a chapel.
