Sány – Church, Canal and Regional Experiences

Sány combines Czech history with waterways, marked trails and regional events. The parish church of St. Andrew, the Sánský Canal and surroundings with mountains and hills are the main highlights.

Church and History of Sány

The present-day Church of St. Andrew was completed in 1827. It is a single-nave, rectangular Empire-style building with a tower above the eastern façade and serves as the parish church of the Roman Catholic parish of Sány. The clearly recognizable architectural form and Empire style give the building a precise profile for cultural and historical consideration. The town therefore has a clearly defined sacred building with a documented period of origin and an established ecclesiastical function.

The history of the town includes Jan Čapek ze Sán. He was a famous Hussite warrior and ruled from the fortress in Sány. A fortress associated with him stood at today’s house numbers 2, 3 and 42. The connection with Jan Čapek ze Sán thus leads into the Hussite history of the town.

The Sánský Canal and Its Locations

The Sánský Canal was built around 1450 to divert water from the Cidlina to the ponds near Poděbrady. The historic canal has been preserved in the Sány area to this day. The diversion also makes the canal an example of historic water management in the region. Its history is therefore directly connected with the flow of water between the river, canal and ponds.

Its course can be traced precisely geographically: it rises from the Cidlina near Bader before Sány, flows through Opolánky, passes through Opolany, Odřepsy, Pátek and Křečkov, and flows into the Mrlina near Budiměřice. For orientation, the canal thus connects Sány with several surrounding places and two rivers.

Hiking, Water and Events

A marked hiking trail runs along the Žehuň–Sány–Libice–Poděbrady route. Sány lies on the section between Žehuň and Libice; Poděbrady forms the further endpoint. Water-based experiences are also associated with Sány: During the Želviáda canoe trip on the Cidlina, a refreshment stop halfway along the route is provided in Sány. When planning the canoe trip, the halfway refreshment stop is a specific point of reference for this water-based experience.

The events of the Sány Fire Brigade Association represent local traditions. Since 2003, it has organized competitions in Sány for the Pohár starosty obce and a district league in firefighting attack. These dates complement the cultural, historical and landscape topics with an explicitly local event connection.

Hořánck, U Borku [Záhornice u Městce Králové] and Kamenec are mountains in the surroundings of Sány. Oškobrh is a hill in the nearby surroundings. The wider regional area around Sány also includes Zámek Kačina, a château.
