Seletice: Village History, Forest and Regional Experiences

Seletice probably originated before the beginning of the 14th century at the southeastern foot of the Loučeňský Ridge. The history of the village is closely linked to its distinctive forest landscape, village architecture and regional experiences. A substantial part of the Seletice cadastral area encompasses an extensive section of the large Svatojířský Forest. On the small upper village square, next to a wooden bell tower, stands a folk-style statue of the Virgin Mary that was probably installed later. The different house surfaces are themselves part of the village’s architectural character. Seletice is also associated with the biography of František Kordač. He was born in 1852 in Seletice, house number 53. In 1919, he became the first non-noble Archbishop of Prague and Primate of the Czechs. His life story adds a historical figure to the architectural features. The connection between his birthplace and his later ecclesiastical office extends the history of the village beyond its preserved houses and village square. Alongside settlement and architectural forms, a personal life story is therefore also one of Seletice’s historical themes.
