Stará Lysá: Cultural Traces in the Central Polabí Region

Historical Traces of Stará Lysá

The oldest written records of Stará Lysá date back to the 11th century. In 1013, Prince Jaromír was held captive by Prince Oldřich at the ducal court in Stará Lysá. The oldest market of Lysá is also documented here for the year 1293 as “antiqum forum Lyssa”. Archaeological finds of tar kilns from the 15th century have been preserved at the “Za pecí” site in Stará Lysá.

Chapels, Trees, and Wayside Markers

Among the notable cultural monuments is the protected Baroque Chapel of Saint Symeon in Čihadla, which belongs to Stará Lysá. It is an original sacred building, that is, a religious structure with an important aesthetic and landscape-shaping function. Another distinctive site is the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, a protected late Baroque sacred building from the first half of the 18th century.

Six small-leaved lime trees stand by this chapel and are among the memorial trees of Stará Lysá. Another cultural and historical landmark is a memorial lime tree approximately 700 years old. The stone cross beside it dates from 1840. A bell tower at a crossroads in Stará Lysá completes this picture; the vernacular structure was built in the first half of the 19th century.

Excursions and Regional Discoveries

On a wooded ridge about 2 km north of Stará Lysá, Count F. A. Špork founded the Bon Repos hunting lodge with the Hermitage of Saint Jerome after 1715. The municipal area of Stará Lysá is also crossed by quiet roads that are suitable for cycling.
