Úmyslovice: Village Green, Churches and Historic Routes
Accommodation in Úmyslovice
Úmyslovice can be understood through its distinctive village centre: the buildings are grouped around an expansive village green with an orchard and a church at its centre. This gives the village a clearly defined spatial character; at the same time, other traces lead into local cultural and landscape history.
Village Green and Getting There
A culverted stream runs through the village green, where a water basin was created. The central location is also reflected in how you get there: according to a municipal planning document from 2024, the bus stop is on the village green in the central part of Úmyslovice. Bus services run on the route between Poděbrady, Dymokury and Městec Králové. Routes and timetables may change; check your specific connection before travelling. In 2024, no marked hiking or cycling trails were listed within the Úmyslovice planning area; trail infrastructure may change.
Traces of Former Ponds
Near Úmyslovice, large depressions in the terrain and bank edges remain as traces of the former Blato pond. The pond itself no longer exists: here, the landforms tell the story of the former water landscape. Another historic pond, Šembor, lay above Úmyslovice; its second dam was opposite the village of Netřebice. At Blato, the surviving terrain features shape the landscape, while at Šembor, the former location and dam are the surviving points of reference.
Polská cesta and the Cultural Landscape
A preserved section of the Polská cesta, whose condition was described in 2023, leads west from Úmyslovice into the fields and ends after a few dozen metres. Strips of grass and rows of fruit trees line it. The section is a rare example of a landscape feature that survived elsewhere only until the 1950s. A regional account from 2024 places the Polská cesta near Úmyslovice on the newer, so-called northern variant of a long-distance route to Kladsko and onwards to Poland. The short section described locally should be distinguished from the route’s wider regional classification: the latter indicates the direction of the long-distance route, not the length of the preserved section.
Churches and Memorial Sites
The Church of St. Linhart is a Neoclassical building dating from 1812 and incorporates some masonry from an older church. Together with its surrounding wall, gate and associated grounds, it is protected as a cultural monument. Six gravestones remain from the church’s former cemetery. The Church of St. Leonard is a branch church and was formerly a parish church; church affiliations can change.
A plaque commemorating J. F. Coulon de Thévenot, the inventor of French shorthand, who was buried there, is located on the south wall of the nave. The memorial to the victims of the First and Second World Wars is also part of the village landscape: it stands in the centre of Úmyslovice. Together with the churches and traces of the historic ponds, these sites offer different insights into the village’s history.
