Vykáň – Cultural Monuments in an Open Landscape

Vykáň combines remarkable cultural monuments with the open landscape of the Polabí Lowland. The village thus offers a concentrated insight into architectural history, religious heritage, and settlement traces reaching far back into the past. At the same time, extensive agricultural fields shape the landscape and give Vykáň a distinctly rural character.

St. Gallus Church and Protected Monuments

A defining landmark is St. Gallus Church, a single-nave Baroque building dating from 1733–1734. It was created by rebuilding an older Gothic church, thereby combining two clearly distinguishable construction phases. The complex also includes a mortuary, a bell tower, and an enclosing wall. The entire complex has been listed in the Czech Central List of Immovable Cultural Monuments since 1958.

Among the other protected heritage sites is the statue of Saint Donatus. It is registered as an immovable cultural monument in the Czech Central List of Monuments under number 35765/2–1971. The gate of Farm No. 29 is also notable for the village’s history: it is regarded as a particularly valuable relic of rural architecture dating from before the Battle of White Mountain and is one of the oldest surviving building elements in Vykáň.

A Bell Tower with a History of Its Own

The bell tower of Vykáň adds an independent Baroque structure to the ensemble. It is a single-storey prismatic building dating from 1769. Inside are two bells from 1947 and 1948. The bell tower in Vykáň is rung regularly every Sunday at noon. Its form, dates, and bells make the tower an illustrative part of the local religious and settlement history.

Archaeological Traces and Historical Location

Vykáň’s history reaches considerably further back than the surviving buildings. Archaeological finds attest to human presence in the area from the Late Stone Age through the Celtic period. Vykáň also developed at a historic crossroads of trade routes between Český Brod, Čelákovice, and Brandýs nad Labem. This inherited location does not define the village as a modern transport hub, but as a settlement with a historically shaped connection to its wider surroundings.

Vykáň lies in the open landscape of the Polabí Lowland. Extensive agricultural fields define this landscape and create a clear contrast with the small-scale interiors of the listed historic buildings. Practical Orientation on Site

The Vykáň Municipal Library is located in the municipal office building and is open every Thursday from 15:00 to 18:00. The library thus complements the historic buildings with an institution of contemporary community life.
