Pátek: Waterways, Mills and Special Discoveries

Pátek connects the landscape of the Polabská nížina with a history of water management and mills. The village is located about 3 km from the spa town of Poděbrady. By bicycle, the journey from Poděbrady to Pátek takes only a few minutes. When choosing your accommodation, you can compare Pátek and Poděbrady as separate locations when planning your trip. Water Management and the Landscape around Pátek

The Sánský Canal runs through the built-up area of Pátek. Its origins date back to the mid-15th century: it was built with the involvement of Jiří of Poděbrady to supply and drain the Poděbrady pond system. Near Ostrov, Úmyslovice and Pátek, extensive terrain depressions and bank edges recall the vanished Blato pond. The history of the water landscape is therefore visible not only in structures, but also in its present-day terrain. In the current townscape, the canal connects built-up areas with the memory of former water management.

Mills and Historical Traces

Nový mlýn mill was built in the 15th century between Odřepsy and Pátek on the left bank of the Sánský Canal. King Jiří gave the mill to his wife Kunhuta. The present appearance of the Nové Mlýny complex, with buildings arranged around a square courtyard, was created through extensive reconstruction at the end of the 19th century. At Nový Mlýn, medieval origins and the appearance of the 19th century can thus be viewed together. Nové Mlýny is located on State Road 32, which follows the old road from Poděbrady to Jičín. The local culture also includes the Church of St. Vavřinec in Pátek, a subsidiary church of the Roman Catholic parish of Poděbrady. The church complements the history of the mills with a religious connection within the village.

Hydrogeopark and On-Site Observations

The Pátek Hydrogeopark, an open-air hydrogeological center, lies northeast of Pátek. The Hydrogeopark provides its own meteorological measurements via a mobile app and stores the data in an archive. In addition to historical topics, this allows you to include current weather observations in your exploration of the area. The Hydrogeopark thus combines a view of the natural environment with the observation of meteorological values.

Events and Small Discoveries

Pátecká Šipka is an annual series of summer dart tournaments. The tournaments are open to everyone; registration as a darts player is not required. The summer scheduling of the dart tournaments creates a distinctive event focus. A frog chorus can be heard from Hliňák pond. A walk across a meadow leads to Lazarův mlýn, whose adjacent ponds recall the important tradition of fishpond farming in Bohemia. The walk to Lazarův mlýn thus combines exercise with a view of Bohemian fishpond farming. The traditional Rybářský čtyřboj combines fishing with target throwing and shooting. Pátek therefore offers historical themes, a waterscape and events that you can combine around different focuses for your trip.
