Městec Králové between Town History and Landscape

Městec Králové combines a varied town history with a flat, in places gently hilly landscape. To the south and east, the town is largely bordered by extensive oak forests. The oak forests give the surrounding area a different character from the open settlement area.

Late Baroque Church and Historic Townscape

A prominent architectural monument is the Church of St. Margaret. After the town fire of 1792, it was rebuilt as a late Baroque church between 1792 and 1794. The single-nave rectangular building has a semicircular apse and a prismatic tower on the south side. Mass is regularly celebrated in the parish church of St. Margaret on Sundays at 9:00 a.m.

The town hall also tells the story of the town’s development. It stands on the second part of the market square and was built after a major town fire at the end of the 18th century. Its square floor plan is complemented by a courtyard wing in the middle. Such architectural details give the town tour a tangible historical dimension. Together with the town hall, the church and the town’s architecture can be viewed as two historical focal points.

From Fortified Settlement to Town

Městec Králové was established around the 13th century as a fortified small town on the Silesian road from Hradec Králové to Prague. According to local legend, Přemysl Otakar II was born here. After his coronation as king, he elevated Městec Králové to town status, granted it numerous privileges of the royal chamber, and awarded it a lion coat of arms. The legend and the town’s elevation tell two aspects of its history: its connection with Přemysl Otakar II and its development through royal privileges.

For further insights, the cultural and creative center houses the town library, an information center, and a museum exhibition hall. The museum is open during the library’s opening hours. The area around Městec Králové also contains protected trees estimated to be more than 100 years old.
