Kostomlátky: Elbe, Cycling Routes and Village Culture

Kostomlátky combines the Elbe landscape, cycling and hiking trails, and a remarkably rich village history. Archaeology and Village Culture in Kostomlátky

The archaeological site “Štěrkovna I,” bearing the identification number 13-13-10/8, is located in the Kostomlátky area and is attributed to the Neolithic period. In addition, the entire administrative area of the municipality is considered an area with archaeological finds. For travelers interested in history, this means that not only a single sightseeing spot is relevant, but the village as a whole is an archaeologically significant area. For those interested in early history, the focus therefore extends from a specific archaeological site to the municipality as a whole.

The village square also brings together several independent cultural monuments. The Chapel of Kostomlátky is a sacred monument on the village square. Its square floor plan, tent roof, and bell tower set on top give the building a clearly recognizable form. According to its inscription, the chapel dates from 1896; it also bears a memorial plaque dedicated to local residents who fell in the First World War. The gate of farmstead No. 6 and the cross on the village square are each considered architecturally valuable structures. This means the village can be viewed not only through its chapel, but also through the farm entrance and the cross.

The Elbe, the Weir and Designated Natural Areas

By the water, Kostomlátky reveals another side. The lock chamber measures 85.0 × 12.0 meters. The original weir at Kostomlátky was built between 1933 and 1937. Its reservoir can be used for water sports and recreation. The navigable waterway “Labská vodní cesta” is also designated on the Elbe in the Kostomlátky area. Depending on your interests, this area can therefore complement a cultural tour of the village with a water-related perspective. Together, the weir and reservoir form the focal point of the area’s water engineering alongside the historic village square.

The supraregional biocorridor 10, “Stříbrný roh – Polabský luh,” is also designated in the Kostomlátky area. As part of the natural landscape, it adds a landscape dimension to the village and water-related themes. This creates another spatial reference for travel planning alongside the village square and the Elbe.

Cycling and Hiking as Possible Activities

EuroVelo 4 passes through the Kostomlátky area and runs there along cycling route No. 24. For hikers, the blue-marked Nymburk–Dražice trail passes through the built-up area of Kostomlátky. The routes cater to different forms of activity: EuroVelo 4 for cycling and Nymburk–Dražice for hiking.
