Netřebice – History and Discoveries

A Place with a Long History

Netřebice is one of the oldest settlements in the Nymburk region and was founded in the 11th or 12th century. In 1185, Netřebice belonged to the Knights of the Cross of St. Mary. According to tradition, Alžběta, the wife of Prince Fridrich, gave Netřebice to the Knights Hospitaller in 1186. In the 16th century, the settlement was owned by Poděbrady Castle. Its history thus leads from its foundation in the early Middle Ages through ecclesiastical ownership to Poděbrady Castle in the 16th century.

Bell Tower, Farmstead, and Chapel

One of Netřebice’s distinctive historic features is the bell tower. The two-story masonry structure has a bell-shaped roof and a lantern. It probably dates from the mid-19th century; its façades and roof were restored in 2012. The gateway of Farmstead No. 7 is also noteworthy. It stands east of the village square in Netřebice and is a Late Baroque gateway from the mid-19th century. A small, recently renovated Chapel of the Virgin Mary adds to these points of local historical interest. Nature Trail and Historic Pond Landscape

The history of the landscape also extends beyond the immediate center of the settlement. The main dam of the historic Rybník Blato was located on the road between Kouty and Netřebice. In the wider regional surroundings of Netřebice lay this historic pond, which, at 996 hectares, was historically the largest pond in Bohemia. It belonged to the pond system in the Poděbrady and Nymburk area. The historic landscape of Netřebice thus extends beyond the settlement center to the pond system in the Poděbrady and Nymburk area.
