Sadská: Discover History, Nature and Circular Trails
Sadská between Town History and River Landscapes
Sadská combines striking examples of Czech history with a landscape shaped by former sand-mining areas, pine forests and Elbe side arms. If you would like to combine culture and nature during your stay, you will find a wide range of options here: historic buildings in the town, a circular trail with stone markers, Jezero lake with swimming opportunities, and protected landscapes in the nearby and wider surroundings.
Historical Traces in the Town
The originally Gothic Church of St. Apolinář acquired its present appearance through a Baroque-Gothic reconstruction in 1737–1739. The Baroque bell tower Zvonice u náměstí was built in 1691 as the original clock tower. This historical picture is complemented by the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows: it was originally built at a healing spring in 1714–1721, now has a Baroque appearance and is listed as a cultural monument.
The O. G. Paroubek Monument is also one of Sadská’s special memorial sites. The tomb created by Jan Štursa in 1910 was designed in the Art Nouveau style and is listed as a cultural monument. The cultural selection thus ranges from sacred architecture and a historic clock tower to an artistically designed tomb.
Museum, Firefighting History and Theatre
The Městské muzeum Sadská presents an exhibition on the history of the town. The display spans the period from archaeological excavations to the present day and was prepared by the Polabské muzeum in Poděbrady. The Hasičská expozice in Sadská offers a different historical perspective. It commemorates the deeds of Czech firefighters who gave their lives for the freedom of the people and the preservation of the ideal “Bližnímu ku po moci”.
The history of the Klicperovy divadelní dny also provides a cultural point of interest. The event was revived in 1999 and has held the status of a regional theatre showcase since 2005. It complements the permanently visible architectural and memorial sites with a connection to theatre culture.
A Circular Trail with History and Nature
The educational trail “Po stopách našich předků” leads through Sadská and includes 20 stone markers at historical or natural points of interest. It begins at Palackého Square and can be completed as a circular route on foot or by bicycle; a map is available. This makes it possible to combine the town’s history with impressions of the landscape without having to decide on a mode of transport in advance.
Skála and the Landscape around Sadská
Skála, in the western part of the Sadská inselberg, is registered as a significant landscape feature and is of ecological, landscape and geomorphological importance. The site is also an important fossil locality from the Middle Turonian, with a very rich occurrence of fossilized marine animals. For travel planning, this creates an unusual contrast with the historical sights: alongside architectural history, the geological past of the landscape takes center stage here.
Jezero was formed by sand mining, which began in 1972 and ended in 1992. Today, it offers clean water and swimming opportunities amid pine forests. The so-called Old Elbe, a former arm of the Elbe, lies in the immediate vicinity. It is registered and protected as a significant landscape feature and contains wetland communities as well as rare protected animal and plant species. In the wider region around Sadská are also the Kersko–Bory forests, which have been protected as the Přírodní park Kersko–Bory nature park since 2010.
Sadská as a Base
Sadská has good bus and rail connections to Prague, Nymburk and Kolín. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore decide between a stay focused on the town’s history, a day in nature and swimming at Jezero, or a combination of a circular trail, landscapes and culture.
