Dymokury: Castles, Churches and Nature Trails

Dymokury offers an interesting combination of historic architecture, sacred architecture, and nature exploration. Castle History in Dymokury

Between 1615 and 1618, Dymokury Castle was converted from a medieval fortress into a Renaissance château. The present-day Dymokury Château, with its spacious courtyard, was built in the second half of the 17th century. As a building, it is a three-winged, single-storey Baroque structure. These successive development phases make the château a particularly vivid subject for anyone who wants to understand historic places not only by their present-day appearance but also by their architectural history.

Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary

A second architectural highlight is the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. It was built between 1723 and 1725, probably based on a design by J. Santini. The church is a Baroque central-plan building with an oval exterior and an octagonal interior floor plan. This gives it a different architectural character from the three-winged château. Kalvárie and the Pond Landscape

Southwest of Dymokury, in the direction of Vestec, a stone cross dating from 1866 stands on Kalvárie Hill. Its specific location adds a smaller monument in the landscape to the historic buildings. For a nature-focused experience, the Pustý rybník Nature Educational Trail leads through the surrounding pond system. The 2 km educational trail has seven stations covering flora, fauna, and geology.

Educational Trail and Excursion Planning

The Pustý rybník Nature Educational Trail begins at the dam of Pustý rybník on the road between Poděbrady and Jičín, about 1 km from Dymokury railway station, and ends at the dam of Jakubský rybník. The approximate distance of 1 km helps you with orientation, while the length of 2 km describes the educational trail itself. For an excursion with a stroller or bicycles, the route “To Dymokury’s sights, narrow-gauge railway and legends” is also an option. It can be travelled with a stroller and by bicycle; on the meadow paths, off-road tires are required for this. The excursion is available for free download to all visitors.

Pustý rybník, located near Dymokury, is part of the Rožďalovické rybníky bird protection area.
