Karlovy Vary District: Culture, Nature and Regional Specialties

Karlovy Vary District combines impressive landscapes, a long-established spa and urban culture, castles and regional specialties. When deciding on your trip, the main consideration is whether you want to focus on Karlovy Vary, historic cultural sites or nature experiences in the Ore Mountains. Several destinations offer very different ways to explore them: from a self-guided exhibition and an educational trail on a boardwalk to climbing routes and water-based tourism.

Karlovy Vary between spa tradition and regional flavors

In Karlovy Vary, you can learn about the region’s Becherovka heritage on a guided tour covering its history and production, including a tasting. The drink has been produced there since 1807 and is made from Karlovy Vary regional water, spirit, sugar, herbs and spices. Karlovy Vary wafers are also part of the city’s culinary identity. Their early form is documented as far back as before 1800; the first bakery specializing in Karlovy Vary wafers opened in 1867.

The city’s nearby cultural attractions also include the 50-metre-long cast-iron Sadová Colonnade and Mozart Park. The park is freely accessible year-round and contains historic gravestones. In the spa forests stands the Findlaterův altán, the oldest excursion pavilion in Karlovy Vary. It is freely accessible and offers views towards the Teplá Valley. The Dorotin altán is a pavilion built in the Empire style in 1791 in the Teplá Valley.

Wetlands, rocks and industrial history

Božídarské rašeliniště is protected as the largest wetland in the Ore Mountains and lies at an altitude of around 1,000 metres above sea level. Its habitat includes wetlands, mountain meadows, heathland and woodland; the area also provides a habitat for many protected and endangered plant and animal species. Access is via an educational trail on a boardwalk from the car park. This makes the visit a clearly defined nature experience in which landscape and information are combined.

Svatošské skály form a granite rock city on the left bank of the Ohře in a deep valley near Hory. They can be reached on foot, by bicycle or as part of water-based tourism. The Karlovy Vary–Loket cycle path, with backbone cycle route 204, passes through the rocks. For active days, climbing routes graded 4 to 8+ are available there.

The UNESCO Ore Mountains/Krušnohoří Mining Region also broadens the historical perspective: it documents mining innovations and their influence beyond the Ore Mountains. In Krásný Les, the early Baroque Church of Saints Peter and Paul recalls the history of construction at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Castles and exhibitions for varied days out

The castle complex of Bečov nad Teplou includes a botanical garden and is associated with the Romanesque Reliquary of Saint Maurus. The museum-gallery exhibition presents this reliquary; the exhibition on the Bečov Reliquary is self-guided. Valeč likewise combines several historical layers: the castle was created by rebuilding a late Gothic castle after 1585 and was later remodelled in the Baroque style. It can be visited during opening hours.

This allows different cultural interests to be combined without repeating the same type of attraction: in Bečov, the reliquary is the focus, while in Valeč, it is the development of a castle complex from its late Gothic origins to its Baroque transformation. Another historical trace leads to the mint, which became the Royal Mint after 1528.
