Schneidmühl – Cycling, Nature and Local History

Schneidmühl combines cycling, protected landscapes and a multifaceted local history. Pila lies on the slopes above the floodplains of the Lomnický potok. Meadows, pastures and extensive forests characterize the surrounding area; at the same time, mining history and local traditions recall the development of the village. In the forests, along the cycle routes and among the historic traces, there are various ways to discover the area actively or with a view to its past.

Natural landscape between meadows, pastures and forest

Pila is surrounded by meadows, pastures and extensive forests. The Hořečková louka na Pile, a 1.5932-hectare natural monument, has a special connection to nature. It protects species-rich meadows and pastures with endangered plant communities and specially protected plant species. This means that the focus here is not only on an open landscape, but also on a clearly defined habitat. The low hills around Pila limit direct views of the surrounding municipalities and shape the perception of the landscape locally. The extensive forests offer numerous paths for hikes and excursions; open areas and wooded sections create varied impressions throughout the day.

Cycling on two long-distance routes

National Cycle Route No. 39 runs through Pila along the Karlovy Vary–Bochov–Chyše route. In addition, the regional section of the European long-distance cycle route EV4 leads from Karlovy Vary via Kolová and Pila to Dlouhá Lomnice and Bochov. Those exploring the area by bicycle can therefore choose between a route via Bochov and Chyše and a connection through Kolová, Pila and Dlouhá Lomnice. The village is thus integrated into two supraregional cycling connections, without the landscape being limited to a single activity.

Pilská hospoda and bicycle services

Pilská hospoda provides cyclists with a charging station for electric bicycles. In addition, Pilská hospoda offers year-round services for day-trippers, regular guests and organized groups. This specific connection complements the two cycling routes with a practical aspect, while the forests and meadows provide the scenic setting for further activities.

Local history from milling to mining

The early documented history of Pila includes a mill on the Lomnický potok and a sawmill established there. This sawmill probably gave the later settlement its name. From the 1880s onward, intensive mining activity developed in Pila. Lignite and, above all, wax coal were mined. Mining was also associated with a wax factory and a briquette factory. Operations ended in 1968 after suitable reserves had been exhausted. The local history thus leads from water-powered mills on the stream to an industrially shaped period and its end in the 20th century.

Masopust as a local tradition

The Masopust processions offer another way to experience the local culture. In Pila, they are regarded as a well-known local tradition. They thus stand alongside the traces of milling and mining, as well as the natural monument, meadows, pastures and forest, as another component of the village.
