Lichtenstadt (Hroznětín) combines historic sites with a local walking trail and recurring town festivals. The Jewish cemetery and St. Peter and Paul Church represent different chapters in the town’s history. South of the town, the Velký Rybník recreational area adds summer activities to your stay.

Cemetery and churches in Lichtenstadt

The Jewish cemetery lies on the northern outskirts of Hroznětín. The site includes gravestones dating from the 17th to the 20th century, a gate and a perimeter wall. The town recommends the cemetery as a tourist destination and describes it as one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Central Europe. The cemetery is locked; you can borrow a key from the Hroznětín municipal office. As access arrangements may change, check whether a visit is possible before you go.

St. Peter and Paul Church was founded by Teplá Monastery at the beginning of the 13th century; the Romanesque building was completed in 1217. From 1732 to 1734, the old church was expanded to its present form. Much of the original tower had already collapsed in 1643. In 1678, master carpenter Hans Georg Spaniger from Ostrov built a Baroque octagonal bell tower there. The church is preserved and occasionally open to visitors. Check locally before your visit to find out whether access is possible. The Flaschner Chapel of the Assumption of Mary is another historic site in the town; Lesy České republiky restored it in 2015.

Hroznětínská zastavení walking trail and Glorriet viewpoint

The first Hroznětínská zastavení walking trail is 4 km long and has ten stops with information boards. After a steeper climb, the route reaches the U altánku well; the Glorriet viewpoint is just under 300 metres farther on. From there, the view stretches from the southern part of the Ore Mountains to Karlovy Vary. The length and number of stops provide a clear guide for the loop; the route and information boards may change, so check the latest details before setting out.

Town festivals in August and December

Hroznětín’s town festivals take place every year on the last Saturday in August. The cultural and music programme has included the Krušnohorská bramboračka cooking competition since 2011, where potato soup is prepared in a cauldron. Individual programme items may vary; check the announcements for your chosen date.

Another recurring event is the Christmas tree lighting on 1 December. It includes an accompanying programme, a Christmas market on Krušnohorské náměstí and an Advent concert with singing in St. Peter and Paul Church. The two dates offer different seasonal highlights: in August, the programme features culture, music and the cooking competition; in December, the tree lighting, market and Advent singing. Confirm the latest event details before your trip.

Summer at Velký Rybník

The Velký Rybník recreational area lies south of Hroznětín and is one of the largest holiday cottage areas in the Karlovarsko region. In summer, the area is suitable for fishing, cycling, mushroom picking and hiking. This lets you weigh up a trip focused on Lichtenstadt’s local history and events against summer activities in the recreational area to the south.
