Abertham in the Ore Mountains: Mining History and Educational Trails

Abertham is a mining town in the Ore Mountains. Forested summits rise around Abertamy; at the same time, the area combines mining and craft history with trails for hikers, cyclists, and winter sports enthusiasts. If you would like to combine nature, culture, and active days during your stay, you will find several different ways to explore the town and its surroundings.

Mining History and Cultural Heritage

Abertamy was founded as a mining settlement because of its silver and tin deposits and was later elevated to the status of a royal mining town. The Abertamy–Boží Dar–Horní Blatná mining landscape includes Abertamy, including the mining settlement of Hřebečná. In the wider surroundings of Abertamy, this mining landscape is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Abertamy Museum documents the town’s glove-making traditions and mining past. The exhibition comprises around 300 exhibits on the manufacture of leather gloves, as well as a multimedia area with a time machine. The museum also features a mining history exhibition with minerals that originate primarily from the Jáchymov region. To help place the town’s history in context, the former craft is presented here alongside the raw materials that shaped Abertamy.

Historical buildings include the Church of the “Čtrnácti sv. pomocníků”. It was built in 1534 by the town of Jáchymov on the village square of the newly founded mining settlement of Abertamy and remodeled in the Baroque style between 1735 and 1738. Its layout comprises a partially recessed prismatic tower, a single-nave body, and a pentagonal chancel. Vila Felicitas is a registered immovable cultural monument, belongs to the town of Abertamy, and is considered an exceptionally well-preserved building with numerous original elements.

Educational Trails Around Abertamy

The three educational trails start at Náměstí Míru near the information center. The Plešivec educational trail is 8 km long, leads through forested terrain to 1,028 m-high Plešivec, and then returns to Abertamy through the valley of the Bystřice stream. The Hřebečná educational trail begins about 800 m from the square on a green-marked hiking route toward Plešivec. It is 3.8 km long; there is also an 11 km extension around Bludná.

The 7 km-long “17 abertamųských zastavení” educational trail follows in the footsteps of Alexander Wüst, a photographer from Abertamy who ran a photography school. The Hřebečná educational trail also passes the Lom Hřebečná stop. There, visitors can learn about a distinctive mountain ridge of volcanic rock with columnar jointing, as well as protected plant and animal communities. The different trail lengths make it easier for you to choose between a more compact circuit and a more extensive hike.

Cycling and Winter Experiences

There are routes for cycling trips around Abertamy. Local cycling route No. 2004 runs from Abertamy to Český Mlýn, is 14 km long, and is classified as moderately difficult. In winter, groomed cross-country ski trails are available around Abertamy; downhill skiing is possible at the Plešivec ski area near Abertamy. The Kryštof adit at Důl Mauritius is open to the public from May to September.
