Theusing: Culture, Nature and Trails in the Toužim Area

Culture and History in Toužim

Those who choose Theusing as a travel destination will find an unusually rich combination of urban history, religious buildings and regional features in the cultural surroundings of Toužim. The castle complex of Toužim comprises the Upper and Lower Castles, the manorial brewery and part of the west wing of the farmyard. It documents the architectural development of the town and its earliest urban development.

The Upper Castle preserves a particularly large amount of historic substance: its Romanesque-Gothic core originated from the provost's residence and was converted into the donjon of a noble castle after 1437. The church, too, tells the story of several eras. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built at the town fortifications of Toužim at the end of the 15th century. Inside are wall paintings by J. J. Kramolín from 1778; the church also preserves a Gothic north tower and a Baroque side chapel of the Suffering Christ dating from 1699. The Marian column is likewise one of Toužim's noteworthy architectural monuments.

Educational Trail, Pond Landscape and Pilgrimage Routes

For travel plans that combine nature and culture, the St. Blaise educational trail offers several different themes. It is approximately 3 km long and runs partly along a maintained dirt track, across meadows and, in the final third, along a paved road. Its stations explain natural features, historical connections, population movements, traditional crafts and cultural monuments. The changing surfaces are just as relevant to planning your day as the distance: the dirt track, meadow and asphalt form different sections of the route rather than one continuous, uniform surface.

The educational trail runs in the surroundings of Blažejský Pond near Nežichov and lies in an area belonging to the Natura 2000 network. Another link between the landscape and religious history is the Skokovská Trail, which connects Toužim with Skoky. The Toužim area also contains the pilgrimage chapel near Lachovice on a historic pilgrimage route regularly used by processions from Toužim, Útvina and Otročín to the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Skoky.

The source of the Střela River in Prachomety near Toužim is also marked. If it is located on private property, it may be visited with the owners' permission. An information board in the village square of Prachomety provides information about the Střela River and the history of the village. The source and the board thus emphasize different aspects: one marks an origin in the landscape, while the other connects the river with the history of the village.

Regional Products and Orientation

The Biofarma Belina is part of the region's local character. At its farm dairy, it produces fresh cheese and cream cheese, quark, yogurts, spreads, Žervé and milk. A concrete insight into regional food production thus complements the historical and landscape-related themes around Theusing. The farm dairy therefore represents an everyday perspective on the region, while the castle, church and educational trail establish historical and landscape-related themes.

The Toužim Information Centre provides tourist information about local sights and events. For further destination selection, you can also consider Kojsovice.
