Castle, Monastery and Porcelain

The Zámek Ostrov complex originated as a fortified town castle, which Kašpar Šlik had converted into a Renaissance chateau around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. The Dvorana features an exhibition on the history of the chateau and an exhibition on Ostrov porcelain from the once-famous, now defunct Pfeiffer and Löwenstein Schlackenwerth porcelain manufactory.

Today, all buildings in the Klášter Ostrov – Posvátný okrsek monastery grounds, except for the monastery convent, are open to the public and serve as museum exhibition spaces. In the Letohrádek Ostrov, a branch of the Galerie umění Karlovy Vary presents works by Czech artists in temporary exhibitions, predominantly from the first half of the 20th century. A permanent porcelain exhibition there also documents porcelain production from its beginnings in the 19th century through the second half of the 20th century.

Historic Centre and Park

Stará radnice Ostrov is a Gothic-Renaissance building in the historic centre of the town on Staré náměstí. The “Hodinové stroje a strojky” exhibition displays clock movements whose history dates back to the 16th century. Stará radnice also regularly hosts exhibitions by local and regional artists.

The Zámecký park is part of the Zámek Ostrov, Palác princů and Letohrádek complex. It stretches along both sides of the Jáchymovský potok stream and is especially inviting in spring and summer for walks and relaxation on benches or in the grass. This allows you to combine historical sightseeing with quieter time outdoors.

Nine Ponds as a Natural Attraction

The Borecké rybníky consist of a group of nine ponds created in the 16th century. They were originally used for fish farming and irrigating the surrounding fields. Today, they are a protected natural monument with opportunities for walking and sports, as well as an educational trail. The group of ponds thus offers its own perspective on the landscape around Ostrov.

Letohrádek Ostrov is open seasonally from May to October. For an additional historical stop, visits to the Rudá věž smrti in Dolní Žďár u Ostrova are possible by prior arrangement with the owner, the Confederation of Political Prisoners of the Czech Republic. The Rudá věž smrti is a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic and commemorates the period of intensive uranium ore mining in the Jáchymov area after the Second World War.
