Karlsbad: Spa Town, Castles and Nature in Western Czechia

Karlsbad combines a spa town with castles, museums and impressive landscapes. Situated in the deep valley of the Teplá and surrounded by rocks and wooded hills, the city offers a versatile base for cultural discoveries, nature experiences and relaxing days.

Spa Tradition and Regional Characteristics

The spa colonnades of Karlsbad lead to mineral springs. These include the Vřídlo geyser, which rises 12 metres high. Together with Františkovy Lázně and Mariánské Lázně, Karlsbad is one of the Czech spa towns included in the UNESCO serial World Heritage Site “The Great Spa Towns of Europe”. A traditional regional speciality of the Karlovy Vary Region is spa wafers – a small culinary discovery that is just as much a part of the spa town as its springs and colonnades.

Castles, Museums and Special Exhibitions

At Loket Castle, the 26-metre-high tower serves as a viewpoint over the surrounding area. Music and theatre performances take place in the ceremonial hall. The rotunda is also worth seeing: it dates from the 12th century and has an interior diameter of 3.6 metres.

The museum-gallery exhibition at Bečov nad Teplou presents the Romanesque goldsmith's work, the Reliquary of Saint Maurus. The visit is self-guided, with texts available in Czech and English; the exhibition also includes interactive elements. The reliquary was discovered on 5 November 1985 in the chapel of Bečov Castle.

Kynžvart Chateau provides another cultural highlight. The Cabinet of Curiosities displays around 1,800 objects, including two Egyptian mummies; the older one dates from more than 3,500 years ago. The museum is considered one of the oldest private museums in the world. The park contains a system of ponds, romantic niches and places to relax.

Nature, Trails and Practical Orientation

In the Karlovy Vary Region, a dense network of marked hiking trails connects the Krušné hory, the Slavkovský les, towns and villages. In the Kladská Moor National Nature Reserve, an accessible nature trail leads through meadows, forests and peat bogs around Kladská Pond. Hiking and cycling trails also run near Kynžvart Spa and Kynžvart Chateau.

For longer cycling tours, the 128-kilometre EuroVelo Route 4 runs through the Karlovy Vary Region. It begins in Pomezí, passes through Cheb, Kynšperk nad Ohří, Sokolov, Loket, Karlovy Vary and Žlutice, and then continues to Žihle.

Kynžvart State Castle is fully accessible and has a lift as well as an accessible toilet. There is also a children's play area near the ticket office. Bus connections to Kynžvart Chateau run from several directions; some services stop at the castle. Train connections to Lázně Kynžvart operate from Plzeň and Cheb. Get off at the Lázně Kynžvart stop in Stará Voda.
