Discover Pechöfen: Nature, History and Excursions
Smolné Pece was historically known by the German name Pechöfen. The place combines a natural landscape with an unusual history shaped by resin processing, charcoal production and pegmatite mining. If you are looking for a place to relax and take excursions in the surrounding area, you will find various starting points here for planning your trip.
Clearing, Forest and Geological Traces
Smolné Pece lies in unspoiled nature on an extensive clearing on the northern slope of Hamerský vrch. Slightly more than half of the area is forested. As a result, open landscapes and woodland meet directly, shaping the character of the place without the need for an artificial sequence of sights.
A particular point of interest is the Smolné Pece geological locality. It is located in a forest 0.5 km south of the shop in the centre of the village. The locality includes surface mining sites and overgrown spoil heaps from pegmatite mining. It also exposes an outcrop of the largest pegmatite body found so far in the Nejdek Massif. For an excursion, this place offers an insight into the geological history of the surrounding area and the traces of earlier raw-material extraction.
The History Behind the Name Pechöfen
Historic tar kilns were used either to refine raw resins by melting them in special kilns, or resin was produced as a by-product of charcoal production in charcoal-burning mounds. The presumed historical predecessors of Smolné Pece included huts used by resin producers. Resin-rich wood from spruce and other coniferous trees was an important prerequisite for operating tar kilns. The German name of the village therefore refers to a specific economic activity and not merely to a traditional designation.
Cultural and social events are still part of village life today. The municipality regularly organizes such events, including the raising of the maypole in connection with the burning of the witches. These traditions complement the natural and industrial history with a communal aspect that can be incorporated into your travel plans when the dates are suitable.
Everyday Places for an Enjoyable Variety of Activities
Smolné Pece is a popular recreational area and offers a pleasant setting for relaxation and excursions in the surrounding area. A local inn is located in the municipal office building. In the community hall, you can play table tennis for CZK 50 per hour. There is also a children's playground with play equipment in front of the municipal office.
Nohejbal is played predominantly at the sports field in Smolné Pece. Together with the inn, community hall and playground, this provides several different places to consider when exploring this small destination.
