Neudek: Discovering Trails, Culture and Landscape
Neudek combines short routes through the town centre with longer educational trails, historical traces and views across the Rolava Valley. If you would like to combine nature, culture and days of varying lengths during your stay, you will find several clearly distinct starting points here to help with your planning.
Educational trails with different themes
The “Vysoká Štola – Oldřichov” educational trail begins behind Nejdek’s winter sports stadium. It leads through Pozorka, Vysoká Štola and Oldřichov and returns to Nejdek through the Oldřichov Valley. At more than 9 km long, with nine stops covering history, geology, mining, old paths and the character of the landscape, it is the most comprehensive of the walking routes described here. For travel by car, parking spaces are available at the football stadium and the winter sports stadium.
The 5 km-long “Děti dětem” educational trail is located in the southern part of Nejdek. At eight stops, it introduces the plants, animals, rocks and population of the Nejdek region. Especially when travelling with children, this combination of themes provides concrete points of connection for shared discoveries. Shorter and more strongly focused on the town’s history is the 2.6 km-long, red-marked local circular route “In the Footsteps of Famous Personalities from Nejdek” through Nejdek town centre. It leads to memorial stones, plaques on birth houses and other places associated with personalities from Nejdek, including the birthplace of actor Vladimír Ráž and the place from which J. W. Goethe drew the tower of Nejdek.
For another walk starting directly from Nejdek, the 5.4 km-long “Křížovým vrchem” route is a good option. The “Nejdecká křížová cesta” Stations of the Cross is 1,600 metres long, overcomes an elevation difference of 110 metres and includes 14 stone chapels. It also offers views of Nejdek’s historic district and the deep valley of the Rolava. The different route lengths help you choose a suitable day plan, from a short town discovery to a longer hike.
Culture and distinctive landmarks
The “Evangelický kostel Vykupitele” church was completed in 1904 in the Neo-Gothic style. Its grounds, including the Art Nouveau vicarage, have been a protected cultural monument since 2007. Access to the “Hradní věž” is open to the public, but must be arranged in advance with the owner, the dean of St. Martin’s Church. The Nejdek Museum is closed due to the reconstruction of the building and preparations for a new permanent exhibition.
There are also notable destinations for trips beyond Nejdek: The “Krušnohorský Semmering” railway line runs from Nejdek via Nové Hamry to Pernink. Over 15 km, it overcomes an elevation difference of 360 metres with the help of three tunnels and the Nové Hamry loop. The 10.2 km-long hike “Přes Nejdecký Špičák k Lesíku” leads from Nejdek via Nejdecký Špičák to Lesík; swimming is possible in the Lesík Reservoir along the way.
When choosing your accommodation in Neudek, you can therefore first decide on your preferred travel rhythm: short cultural and town walks, educational trails with themed stops, or longer routes and excursions into the surrounding area. For further places in this selection, you can also view Theusing, Sichlau, Stiedra), Horn, Pirkenhammer, Wickwitz, Kohlhau and Lichtenstadt.
