Poschetzau: Culture, Cycling and Osmóza Park

Poschetzau reveals itself through Božičany’s historical and scenic details. A Baroque Chapel of St. Michael, a monument on the Černý potok and architecturally interesting buildings meet cycling routes, ponds and traces of former kaolin mining. This allows you to explore the area according to your interests—culturally, actively or with peaceful stops along the way.

History and Townscape

Božičany was founded before 1359 as a Waldhufendorf settlement along a stream. The term refers to a historical form of settlement and gives the town’s history a clear connection to the landscape. The Chapel of St. Michael in Božičany is a Baroque chapel dating from the second half of the 18th century. It was built with funds from the faithful and the church and was entered into the Czech Republic’s state register of cultural monuments on October 29, 1992. Here, local history and sacred architecture come together without reducing the town to a single historic building.

The monument to the victims of the First World War also makes history visible in the town center. It was erected in 1933, based on a design by Willy Heinz, on the banks of the Černý potok in the village square and stands on the left bank of the stream. This provides a specific historical focal point in the heart of the town that you can include in your exploration of the townscape.

Cycling, Water and the Kaolin Landscape

Two cycling routes of different lengths are at the heart of active days. The 11 km Vintířov–Chodov–N. Role cycling route runs through the northern part of Božičany’s cadastral area. The approximately 16.5 km “Klidný okruh podhůřím” cycling loop between Nová Role, Božičany and Chodov follows mostly quiet roads and cycle paths.

Osmóza Park is a distinctive trace of the landscape’s history. It is a natural oasis beside a pond on the site of a former kaolin mine. At the water, the park offers a shady place to stop and rest. If you do not want to plan an outing exclusively around sporting stages, this documented resting place complements the cycling and landscape experiences with a relaxing break. May adds a seasonal aspect: Every year, MO ČRS Božičany organizes fishing competitions on the local ponds.

Architecture in Detail

Two individual buildings add to the historical perspective on Božičany. Villa No. 66 is an architecturally interesting building from the 19th or 20th century and displays Art Nouveau features. Courtyard No. 10 also contains a building highlighted as particularly interesting. Such details are worth noticing if, alongside larger cultural monuments, you also want to appreciate the less obvious elements of a townscape.

To the left of the road to Nová Role, the small depression of the Sírius mine is still visible. It adds a specific landscape trace to the history of kaolin mining and makes clear that the town’s history can be read not only in chapels, monuments and houses, but also in individual landforms.
