Liberec District

The Liberec District combines striking mountain landscapes, protected nature and historic sites. For your stay, the landscape ranges from 208 m in the north to 1,124 m at Smrk, the highest mountain in the Jizera Mountains. On the mountain slopes, you will find ski lifts as well as conditions for cross-country skiing, hiking and cycling. This makes it possible to spend a holiday here combining active days in the mountains, nature observation and cultural excursions.

Mountains, bogs and protected landscapes

The district includes the national natural monument Čertova zeď and the national nature reserves Rašeliniště Jizery, Jezevčí vrch, Karlovské bučiny and Jizerskohorské bučiny. Jizerskohorské bučiny is part of the UNESCO Natural World Heritage. The nature trail in the Vesec Valley offers a specific nature experience: it runs for about 2 km around Vesec Pond and explains wetland habitats as well as rare or endangered species on seven information boards.

Vesec Pond is also locally known as Tajch and is used for swimming and walking; its beach is freely accessible. The easy 4-kilometre route from Lidové sady to Ruprechtice through the Jizera Mountains is also suitable for a short hike. It passes the forest swimming pool and the U Obrázku church. The route can be reached from the centre of Liberec by tram 2 or 3 and completed by bus 25. Another prominent feature is the Great Štolpich waterfall system, which cascades 30 m down a rock face.

Castles and châteaux as day-trip destinations

The cultural highlights are spread across several landscapes. In the Českodubsko area, preserved folk architecture meets Sychrov Château. The area around Hrádek combines the Kristýna leisure centre with the nearby Grabštejn Castle. The Frýdlantský výběžek is associated with Frýdlant Castle and Château.

Grabštejn was built in the second half of the 13th century as a border fortress on a trade route from Bohemia to Lusatia. Today, visitors can climb the former keep and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The Chapel of St Barbara features extensive wall paintings. There are two sightseeing tours and interactive tours for children to suit different interests. Frýdlant houses the oldest castle museum in Central Europe, which opened in 1801. Exhibits include, among other things, a collection of weapons from the Thirty Years' War and an armoury.

Lemberk also has its own highlights, including Baroque stucco decorations, Zdislava's room, a knights' hall, a black kitchen and a coffered ceiling from 1610. Sychrov is a Neo-Gothic château that served as the residence of the French Rohan family and preserves original furnishings as well as extensive wood carvings. The château is open to the public all year round. In July and August, there are guided tours for children; cultural events, concerts and exhibitions also take place throughout the year.
