Frýdlant: Urban History, Culture and Scenic Trails

Frýdlant is a destination for anyone who wants to discover different sides of a place while travelling: urban history, technical heritage, religious culture and scenic views are presented as clearly distinct themes. This combination is particularly suitable for families with different interests, offering plenty to talk about and several ways to shape a stay without focusing on just one attraction.

Culture in Special Spaces

An unusual place to explore railway history is the railway museum of the Spolku Frýdlantské okresní dráhy. It is located in a former locomotive shed in Frýdlant and preserves exhibits and documents relating to the history of the local railways. The collection combines the site of the former locomotive shed with written, pictorial and material evidence. The exhibition features photographs and artefacts relating to the history of the FOD lines, as well as the historic narrow-gauge diesel locomotive T 36.002. This makes the site particularly appealing to visitors who want to connect technical details with the region’s transport history in an engaging way.

Another historical trail leads to the Stations of the Cross in Frýdlant. It was established in 1737 and renovated in 2017. The Stations of the Cross comprise fourteen stations, a Holy Sepulchre, a spring and a hermitage. These individual elements give the site more than a purely linear sequence of stations: they combine religious tradition with a range of architectural and landscape features.

The town museum is also associated with a distinctive building. It is located on the second floor of Frýdlant Town Hall. Among its exhibits are guild chests and historic furnishings, which document the region’s artisanal and civic traditions. A particularly memorable feature is the moving Christmas nativity scene in one of Frýdlant’s oldest buildings. It was created by Gustav Simon, who came from Frýdlant; its clockwork mechanism moves more than 100 human and animal figures.

Orientation Between the Castle and Scenic Views

A specific distance is documented for orientation around the castle grounds: a paid car park is located 50 metres from the entrance to Frýdlant Castle and its castle complex. Anyone wishing to explore Frýdlant from a different perspective can include the marked Sluneční cesty scenic circuit in their plans. It is intended for exploring Frýdlant and is connected to the international Intercontinental Sun Trail (Sun Trail Intercontinental). For another viewpoint, there is the corner tower of the town hall: it is 48 metres high, and its open gallery at a height of 27 metres offers panoramic views over the town, the castle and the Jizera Mountains.
