Žďárek – Discover History, the Mohelka and Sychrov

Žďárek combines a multifaceted local history with notable differences in elevation, the riverbed of the Mohelka and cultural destinations in the surrounding area. In the centre of Žďárek stands the Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius. It was built in 1872. The chapel in Žďárek is a late Classicist building with Neo-Gothic elements dating from the end of the 19th century. The historic villagescape also includes a small L-shaped rural farmstead with a timber-built residential section.

The name of the village itself also points to an older landscape history. Žďárek derives from the expression „žďářit“, which refers to burning or clearing land for a grain field. The first written references date from 1600. A historic road to Upper Lusatia led through Žďárek. This road was used by the Russian army during the campaign against Napoleon and by the Prussian army in 1866. From 1939 to 1945, the border of the Protectorate also ran through Žďárek.

Between Hrobka and the Mohelka

The elevation can be identified at two points. At 488 metres above sea level, the „Hrobka“ elevation is the highest point in Žďárek. The lowest point is formed by the riverbed of the Mohelka stream, at 342 metres above sea level.

The course of the Mohelka is particularly relevant for active days: Žďárek is suitable as a starting point for cycling tours along the stream. This makes it possible to combine your choice of location with a ride through the landscape, while the historic buildings and paths offer another way to explore the surroundings.

Sychrov: Château, Park and Guided Tours

Sychrov’s English Park also offers attractions in its own right. The orangery has an open arcade and a colonnade. In the English Park, the northern axis ends at the romantic Arturův hrad gate. Two transport-related facts are also important for understanding the location. A railway has run through the cadastral area of Žďárek since 1859. Since 1997, the I/35 road designated for motor vehicles has also run through the cadastral area.

A local feature with a historical connection is the Hostinec Zlatá Hvězda. Its history as an inn dates back to the second half of the 19th century. The menu includes, among other things, beef tenderloin in cream sauce with Carlsbad dumplings, offered in a 150 g portion.
